10 days ago there were perfect conditions for Southern Rust infection in Southern IL. I expect Southern Rust to be easily found the 1st week of August. If scouting today, you may find the early faded lesions that develop ahead of the raised pustule.

What’s the 2025 Drought Outlook? 🌽 🌧️

Here is the spring & summer forecasts from @bam_weather

April:
Very wet in the eastern corn belt as well as some northern areas

May:
Dryness creeps back in over those northern areas but remains wet out east

June:
Rain almost exclusively confined to the eastern corn belt, leaving the central plains dry

June-July-Aug:
The plains and western corn belt get super dry, as the dryness works its way further east. Leaving just the far western corn belt wet

Overall the eastern corn belt doesn’t look like a concern, but the central plains and western corn belt are something to keep an eye on this summer

Soil temperatures saw a dip from the 5 yr average in the 3rd week of February. However, as we get into March it appears that things could become more active as temperatures look to climb

Are there so-called “universal truths” in agriculture? Yield vs pH, nutrient availability by pH, Liebig’s Law of the Minimum, and Mulder’s Chart have been standard references for decades, but are they universally correct? Where did they come from? What was the data behind the info? How big was the study? What was the original context/audience? Have you tested these for validity on your own fields, or are you just assuming they are correct?

Over the next few weeks, I’ll dive deeper into these four “universal truths,” and whether or not you should base thousands of dollars annually on these concepts.

While I’m at it, I’ll probably tackle some additional topics such as soil “balancing” and “health.” Which parts are sly marketing, and which have enough merit and info behind them to be beneficial to your production strategies?

You can't produce a big product, without a big factory! Don't limit your corn's potassium needs!

If your looking to cut back on phosphorus this year, make sure it's not your limiting factor.

Revolving conversations of trimming farm input costs has me constantly revisiting the Law of the Minimum visual. When choosing to reduce specific fertilizer inputs to save $/Acre, do you know if you're overspending on other fertilizer inputs using the law of the minimum?

🌽U.S. #corn yield fails to break USDA's initial trendline yield for a sixth consecutive year, coming in at 179.3 bu/acre (still a record, though!). It also failed to break 180 yet again despite the market first calling for a 180+ yield back in 2018.
