I’ve been quiet for a minute. Quick update:
Capital✔️ Customers✔️ Revenue✔️
All in under 9 months. ~$1T market opportunity. Still in stealth and just getting started…
Vertical SaaS is rewriting the small business playbook. Nail salons, plumbers, and pizza shops can now manage bookings, payroll, and borrowing from a single platform, without ceding control.
The scale may surprise you. These platforms are growing fast because they solve the real, daily challenges of SMB owners.
That’s why it’s the topic of our new miniseries, Vertical SaaS: Fintech Disruption by a Thousand Cuts (sponsored by our friends at Pipe).
In Episode 1, I sit down with @LCSVoiles, CEO of @pipe, to unpack why vSaaS is the perfect channel for embedded finance.
And how platforms like SpotOn and Housecall Pro have become operating systems for entire industries.

Launching an embedded financial product in a new country can be agonizingly slow, unless you've built for global scale, with these three pillars in mind:

Exciting news today! @pipe has acquired https://t.co/1qbkDvLDIH. This isn’t just an acquisition, it’s a step toward redefining small business finance.
As I’ve said many times, access to capital is the biggest challenge for small businesses and the second biggest is spend management. Most of the tools out there just don’t work for smaller companies. We aim to change that.
We always tell our partners how advantageous it is to work with the experts and stand on what they’ve built rather than building everything from scratch in-house. This is us practicing what we preach.
The spend management technology Glean has built—powered by AI—is accelerating Pipe’s spend management tools and expanding our product offering, making Pipe the first embedded capital provider to offer solutions for both major pain points. This acquisition, with our existing card offering, will enable us to accelerate our ambition to build the full Ramp/Brex experience for micro-merchants for the first time.
I’ve known Howard Katzenberg for years and I’m excited to integrate the tech and the team from https://t.co/1qbkDvLDIH. Let’s build something incredible together!
Talking to the business owners on the ground, their stories say it all. Getting funds from traditional channels can be “extraordinarily frustrating,” the application process can take forever and leave you “bogged down” when you need to be focused on running your business, and it’s just not a good fit for many business owners.
There couldn’t be a better time for @GoCardless to bring fast, frictionless working capital to the UK, and we’re excited to partner with them as we expand @pipe into the UK and beyond.
We sat down with Forbes yesterday, and you can read a great summary of today’s launch below:

Big news: @pipe is live in the UK in partnership with @GoCardless! Over £7M of fast, frictionless capital already deployed to SMBs.
Proud of our team and excited for what’s next! 🇬🇧🚀
Today, Pipe is officially live in the UK. Congratulations to our launch partner, @GoCardless , for being the first to bring this fast, frictionless embedded capital solution to UK small businesses. 🧵 1/5
I’ve been really quiet for the past year.
As many of you may know, I sold our previous studio to @pipe.
We had a blast. We got to define so much of what Pipe is today.
And it’s all in good hands.
But a year ago, we sat down and decided to go back.
Back to working with founders, at the earliest stages.
I believe with my whole heart that intuition and taste are the differentiating factors for a majority of companies being built today.
So we’re trying something.
In a day and age where everyone seems to be running a subscription agency to be as hands-off as possible, we want to do the opposite.
Come in, do the heavy lifting, build the relationships, and help establish something lasting.
We’re calling it a design culture studio.
