@Romy_Holland How do you balance this against the social contagion of hearsay?
Some people are very careful about what they share and/or precise about what they observed vs heard -- but most people aren't that scrupulous IME.
Andrej Karpathy told Elon Musk that Tesla will grow from $45B to $1.5T using AI - while competitors spent billions doing it the old way
after this presentation Tesla's stock dropped 3.9%
Karpathy stood up and explained why every competitor will lose
"lidar is a crutch - it sidesteps the fundamental problem "
Musk: "every mile driven is training the network - whether autopilot is on or off "
simply because every single driver was training Tesla's model for free
that $45B company is now worth $1.5T
Waymo spent $27 billion. Tesla spent $0 on data collection
then Andrej left Tesla and joined Anthropic - to build their competitor

@Jason@BeckyHammon I thought her follow up was great, actually. "I said what I said. If he proves me wrong, he proves me wrong."

@paulg Wasn't the promise of AI the reason they felt it had to be a non-profit to start with? They thought that was so important that they chose to innovate on corp structure before innovating on AI. Got it wrong and it cost them. Lesson seems more about hubris than AI promise, IMO.
@mattyglesias Entertainers and founders are analogous on the merits here imo. People just cite entertainers because it’s easier for the masses to understand their work and this the value of what they do.
