As Africa Day approaches, we’re often reminded of liberation through a single hero. But in Zambia, as across the continent, the truth is far more layered, far more human, and far more interesting than that.
In Zambia’s fight for independence, figures like Kenneth Kaunda stood at the forefront, but the movement was shaped just as much by Harry Nkumbula, Simon Kapwepwe, Mainza Chona, and Simon Zukas. Different backgrounds, different beliefs, even different ideas of what freedom should look like, yet all pushing against the same system in their own way.
Their stories sit side by side with tension, disagreement, and unlikely alliances, and together they built something bigger than any one of them.
Africa Day is a reminder that liberation was never a solo act. It was messy, collective, and deeply human.

Most founders building in Africa have one exit in mind: the strategic premium, where a well-capitalised acquirer pays a multiple above the last round because your product solves something they cannot build fast enough themselves. That outcome exists. It has happened.
But it is not the default, and exit announcements that package every exit as a "great exit" are bad for both investors and founders.
There are actually four distinct exit types operating in this market right now, and each has a different set of implications for how you should be building today.
1️⃣ The strategic premium exit is what the headlines describe. Strong returns, the founder often stays on, investors are happy. This is genuinely rare in Africa at the moment. A handful of deals get here.
2️⃣ The feature acquisition is where most transactions are landing. Your product is useful, but the unit economics never fully closed, or the market is too narrow to support a standalone business. An acquirer buys you to fold you into their stack. Early investors may or may not recover capital depending on what is sitting above them on the cap table.
3️⃣ The acqui-hire means the acquirer wants your team, not your product. The product gets shut down. Founders land somewhere reasonable. Investors receive negligible returns.
4️⃣ The distressed sale is the one dressed up most aggressively in ecosystem-friendly language. Runway is ending, a buyer steps in at a fraction of the last valuation, and the press release calls it a strategic consolidation.
Here is what you should do as a founder:
Look at your business honestly and write down which exit your business is actually building toward at its current trajectory, not the one you are pitching and hoping for.
Then write down what would need to be materially true for you to move up one category. That gap is your strategy.

There's a whole industry built around African poverty. NGOs, consultants, conferences, awareness campaigns, celebrity endorsements.
Billions of dollars flow through this system every year, employing thousands of well-paid Westerners.
None of those people have an incentive for the problem to actually be solved, because if African poverty disappeared tomorrow, they'd all need new jobs.
I'm not saying they're evil.
I'm saying the incentive structure is broken, and incentives shape behavior more than intentions do.

As Zambia heads to the polls in August 2026, I’m asking a hard question: do we still have the meaningful power to choose our leaders?
I’ve written about the legal, constitutional & institutional changes that threaten to answer that question for us.
