I’ve struggled to write this, but here it goes…

Until 6 months ago, I considered myself pretty liberal.

I hadn’t thought through every policy position. I just wanted to be on the side of the aisle I thought cared about people the most.

Hurricane Helene was an eye-opening moment for me where I realized my expectations of what a government would do for me, if I REALLY needed it, was not true.

Promises were made, but promises were not kept.

Government officials talked down us.

The media abandoned us.

I wasn’t even REMOTELY political before Hurricane Helene, I didn’t want to be.

But seeing what happened here in Western North Carolina… I couldn’t keep quiet.

Staying silent was morally wrong when the need was so great.

Politics matters when the politics affect YOU.

Most people have no interaction with the federal government in their daily lives… but we did, every single day.

And once politics affects you personally, then politics begins to matter and it’s worth the risk of saying something and being trashed for it, than it is to let a horrible thing continue.

I’m saddened by the attempts to silence some many on this platform with swatting and fear tactics.

I started this journey on X only because I saw people being failed by the government and X was my only tool I had to help them.

To the person/entity swatting people… you are not changing hearts and minds by doing this.

If the goal is to frighten people into silence, that won’t work.

If the goal is to change our minds on politics…

I’ve got a hurricane in Western North Carolina to show you.

Even thought I’m upset and angry at what has happened, I still firmly believe that the only path forward is a peaceful one.

One with true dialogue, even when we agree to disagree… and remain friends.

We are all Americans, and even if someone is harassing me with free speech, I’ll fight for your right to continue to say it.

Because that’s the America I fell in love with.
