🚨🇺🇦🇷🇺 EUROPE’S WAR PANIC: A CIA VETERAN SAYS THE WEST IS MARCHING INTO A TRAP IT REFUSES TO SEE
🧠 George Beebe — former director of Russia analysis at the CIA, now at the Quincy Institute — has delivered what amounts to an autopsy of Western policy, before the patient dies.
In a long interview, he described a Europe that is panicking rather than strategizing, a narrative about Ukraine that is collapsing under the weight of reality, and a debate that has been censored to the point where the only permissible question is how, not whether, to escalate.
🔥 Beebe’s starting point is the hysteria now gripping European capitals. Almost every leader is saying the same thing at the same time: war with Russia is coming, we must prepare. But this is not strategy. It is emotion. It is the panic of leaders who staked their credibility on a proxy war that is being lost — and who now fear being held accountable for the failure. As Slovak Prime Minister Fico put it, they are trying to distract from their own domestic collapses.
📉 For months, Western media insisted Russia was losing. Beebe says the opposite is true. Ukraine is under growing pressure on the ground and, even more dangerously, from the air. The Russian campaign against Ukraine’s energy grid, its data centers, its railway system and its ports has turned the country into a progressively ungovernable space. The narrative that Russia is losing is collapsing because reality is collapsing — and the West has no Plan B.
⚠️ Militarily, Beebe is blunt. Europe has few ground forces, depends overwhelmingly on the United States for logistics, transport, air defense and intelligence, and cannot project power without Washington. If the US stays out, Europe cannot fight Russia. If the US stays in, the conflict becomes nuclear. And in a nuclear conflict, he says, there are no winners. This is why he calls it “highly irrational” for European leaders to prepare their publics for a war with Russia. They should be doing everything to avoid it, not to encourage it.
🛑 He also dismisses the idea that Russia is about to attack NATO. Moscow, he says, has deliberately minimized escalation risks throughout the Ukrainian conflict. It does not want a direct war with the alliance. The recent calming of rhetoric by Estonian officials reflects a dawning realization among frontline states that they would be the first to suffer. In peacetime, being a frontline state for the United States is profitable — trade deals, military aid, political cover. In war, it is fatal. The Baltics and Poland know this. They do not want to become the next Ukraine.
🗣️ On diplomacy, Beebe is equally clear. The West’s position is an unconditional ceasefire that freezes Russian gains, allows Ukraine to rearm and reconstitute its forces, and then return to the battlefield from a stronger position. Russia will never accept this. Moscow wants a comprehensive peace that addresses what it calls the root causes of the war — NATO expansion, the security architecture of Europe, the rights of Russian-speaking minorities. The West refuses even to discuss these issues. The result is a cycle of escalation that has no exit.
📜 Beebe recalls the Minsk agreements. At least there, he notes, there was a signed document. Today there is not even that. The West demands a ceasefire first, then talks. Russia says talks first, then a ceasefire. And so the war continues. The Anchorage proposal — Russia gets Donbas, the front freezes in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, those lines become new administrative borders — is now dead. Secretary of State Rubio said so explicitly: “Anchorage is dead.” Instead of the United States pressuring Ukraine to concede territory, Russia is doing it on the battlefield. Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, Beebe says, will likely fall. It is only a matter of time.
💣 The deeper danger, he warns, is what comes after. Once Russia controls the entire Donbas, it may face the temptation to go further — Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, perhaps even Odessa. Ukraine is gambling that Russia will moderate. Beebe calls that an extreme risk. If Ukraine waits, the terms will only get worse.
🗳️ Meanwhile, the political calendar is shifting. French elections next summer could bring a major change. US midterms in November may weaken Trump. Germany is volatile. The United Kingdom is divided. These factors could converge unpredictably. One possibility is that Ukraine concludes it must make a deal now. Another is that the West panics, looks at the prospect of Ukrainian defeat, and decides to “do something.” Already, voices in the United States are calling for a no-fly zone over Ukraine — which would mean direct war between NATO and Russia. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, published an editorial in the Washington Post advocating total mobilization. Beebe says this sentiment is not isolated. It is a recipe for disaster.
🧠 At the heart of Beebe’s analysis is a distinction he first made in his 2019 book, The Russian Trap: How Our Shadow War with Russia Could Spiral into Nuclear Catastrophe. The West, he argues, treats Russia as a deterrence problem — like Nazi Germany, an expansionist power that will keep going until it meets resistance. But the real dynamic, he says, is a spiral — like the First World War, where a series of misperceptions, alliances and escalations produced a catastrophe no one wanted. The only way out of a spiral is diplomacy that addresses both sides’ core concerns. But that paradigm remains as firmly entrenched today as it was in 2019. Anyone who suggests otherwise is accused of parroting Putin, of being disloyal. The debate has been censored.
🕊️ Beebe’s conclusion is not pessimism. It is an autopsy of a future failure, written while the patient is still alive. Europe cannot win. Europe cannot negotiate. Europe cannot continue. The only way out is diplomacy on the root causes. But the West refuses to discuss them. And so the war continues, and the risk of a direct NATO-Russia conflict grows.
As Beebe puts it, we have censored the debate and agreed that only one hypothesis is permissible. Now we are marching toward war. The question is whether anyone will read the autopsy before it becomes the obituary.
