It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, my predecessor, who departed this life today, Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom.
President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures. He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.
He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential. He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.
In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.
I also extend my condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, most especially the people and traditional leaders of Daura Emirate.
We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.
As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today.
I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.
The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.
May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.

As part of our unwavering commitment to ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Kano under the dynamic leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, I personally went out today to inspect key areas across the state during our monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

While on this inspection, I took time to assess the level of public compliance. I must commend many residents who heeded the call by staying back to clean their immediate surroundings. However, it is regrettable that some individuals still flout this vital civic responsibility. During today’s exercise, our mobile courts were actively on ground, and several defaulters were apprehended and charged instantly. This underscores our seriousness in enforcing the sanitation laws that protect the collective health and well-being of our people.

I wish to remind the good people of Kano State that the monthly sanitation is not a mere ritual. It is a deliberate measure aimed at safeguarding our environment, particularly in this critical rainy season when blocked drainages and dirty surroundings can easily lead to devastating outbreaks of diseases and flooding.

I therefore strongly urge everyone to always comply by staying at home to clean their environment during these exercises. Going forward, we will not hesitate to take stricter actions against violators. Together, let us build the healthy, clean, and climate-resilient Kano we all desire.

I have initiated and continued the construction and rehabilitation of key roads across various communities within Fagge Local Government.

These projects aim to ease transportation, improve infrastructure, and enhance the living standards of our people.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Hajiya Bilkisu Babangida, a veteran voice in international broadcasting with the BBC, and previously the VOA.

Her loss leaves a huge void in the quest for journalistic excellence in our country.

I extend my sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues at the BBC.

My deepest condolences also go to the family and friends of Alhaji Abba Abdullahi Yola, who led Kano Pillars Football Club during my second tenure as governor of Kano State.

Alhaji Yola most prominently led Pillars to immeasurable success that included a streak of three consecutive NPFL titles, a feat that has proven difficult to replicate.
