“I even cursed because Hye-ran didn’t win”: #LeeSungMin faces backlash over Baeksang speech, #ShinSeKyung’s Best Supporting Actress win dragged into controversy.
Actor Lee Sung-min has come under fire following his acceptance speech at the Baeksang Arts Awards, with many viewers criticizing his remarks for allegedly overshadowing Shin Se-kyung’s major win on the night.
The controversy began after Shin Se-kyung won the Best Supporting Actress award in the film category for her performance in Humint. Shortly afterward, Lee Sung-min took the stage and said, “I was so nervous when Yum Hye-ran was nominated. I even cursed because Hye-ran didn’t win.”
While some interpreted the statement as a lighthearted expression of support for fellow actress Yeom Hye-ran, others felt the timing of the comment was inappropriate, especially since Shin Se-kyung had just received the award.
Online reactions quickly became divided. Critics argued that openly expressing disappointment over the results during the ceremony was disrespectful to the winner. Many questioned whether it was necessary to say he “cursed” over the outcome while Shin Se-kyung was present at the venue. Several viewers also felt the speech diminished her achievement and created an uncomfortable atmosphere during what should have been a celebratory moment.
At the same time, supporters defended Lee Sung-min, saying his words were not meant to attack Shin Se-kyung personally but were instead a candid and emotional show of affection toward Yeom Hye-ran, who many had predicted as a strong contender for the category.
As the debate intensified, filmmaker Park Chan-wook attempted to ease the tension during his own speech, joking, “Looking at the results, I am convinced that the judging was fair. Of course, Yum Hye-ran might not agree right now, but please understand. Didn’t Shin Se-kyung do a great job, too?”
Yeom Hye-ran herself also addressed the moment humorously while presenting on stage, introducing herself by saying, “I am Yum Hye-ran, who just lost the award.”
Despite the attempts to calm the situation, Shin Se-kyung’s fans continued expressing disappointment online, insisting that the actress deserved to enjoy her moment without controversy overshadowing her victory.
