I think people need to understand why the backlash against Best Asian Pop has been so much louder and more sustained than the backlash against other regional categories.

Wizkid has spoken against the segregation of African music too, and his criticism was valid. But African artists still submit to those categories, and without the kind of enormous global fandom BTS has backing the message, the conversation eventually died down.

BTS, meanwhile, have been some of the biggest artists of our generation to explicitly push back against the industry boxing them into a regional category. And this time, they didn’t just talk about it but they opted out. And ARMY didn’t just complain. We brought the rules, the numbers, the history, the receipts. That’s why a MONTH later, articles, analysis and criticism are still coming out.

And honestly, this conversation shouldn’t stop at Best Asian Pop. Why are K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, Afrobeats, Latin music etc. constantly being turned into regional boxes? Asia isn’t one language, one culture or one sound. And neither is Africa or Latin America.

Music should be judged as music. Pop music is pop music, regardless of where it comes from or what language it’s in.

Afrobeats, Latin artists and Asian artists should be able to compete in general fields with American pop stars.

The question is: why does the industry keep deciding where music belongs before deciding what it deserves?
