Sharing Knowledge is Power. Share your knowledge with others around you. Regardless of who you are - share your knowledge & build a smarter organisation. Scared it will make you vulnerable to give away knowledge? Nope! How many Jedi benefited from Yoda’s knowledge and experience?
This gets overlooked as it is easier to avoid difficult conversations.Talking fixes everything whether it concludes in resolution or deciding that the issue can’t be fixed. Important for partnerships & family business. Conflict casts a shadow over your life & business. Just talk!
It's easy to get paralysed chasing perfection. Making sure every detail is in the right place. Waiting for the perfect time. While you're standing still. Others are moving forward thru action. Action is freedom & empowerment! Fuck perfection! Because done is better than perfect!
This applies to everyone. I want to speak specifically to long term owners. Know this: You are not always right. You do make mistakes. Asking for guidance will allow you to fix problems faster. It is not a sign of weakness. So, ask for counsel when you need it & when you don’t.
Make a promise to your children you’d better do what you said. Because they won't forget! Employees are the same. False hope can damage your workforce. Whether it is improving the snacks in the break room or implementing a flexible working policy. If you said you’d do it, do it.
Don’t be the same as your competitors. Be influenced by them. But always be different. Create an ‘Only Statement’ detailing specifically what your business does to make it unique. Staff need to know this & use it when they speak about the business. Stand out. Be different.
Freshen up your business by using naïve experts! They're not involved in your business/industry. They allow you to think differently. They're free to think ‘what if’ cos they have no part in your business. Use naïve experts when planning. Thanks to Disney legend @duncanjwardle.
Remember your 1st day at high school? Terrifying! But it got easier because you knew what to expect. The same goes if you are starting a business/employing people for the 1st time/any 1st step in a new situation. It’s only scary the 1st time! Go & do it. You’ll be glad you did.
Whether starting a business/vacation planning/prepping a dinner party–determine the end goal and work back from there. What are the steps to get there? Who will help you achieve it? What is the cost & how much will you make? There's your plan! Review often, amend appropriately.
If something isn’t working you in your business or the market has changed. Then be like Ross from Friends & PIVOT! Change direction & do something different with your business! Learn from customers & competitors. Find out what they want or what you’re not doing. PIVOT!
Every business has touchpoints. Understand how your customers interact with them. It could be dirty facilities, the UX of your online ordering system or something else. The customer experience matters, walk through it regularly & see what they see.
Just because you’re the boss, doesn’t mean you are always right. If you are wrong or you do make a mistake – don’t try and style it out. Admit your error. Apologise. And move on. Remember – give credit, take the blame. #leadershipskills#business#businesscoach#leadership
Even with good planning, sometimes, you have to put in extra effort & hours. It might be delays from a 3rd party or a customer has a rush order. Get on and get it done. As Coach John Wooden said – Success travels in the company of very hard work. There is no trick, no easy way.
You pay your staff for their knowledge. Trust them to do their jobs. Don’t do their jobs for them. Brief them correctly & delegate. Otherwise, trust them to do what they are paid for. If you don't trust them - you have other issues! Sort it out. If not, leave them alone!
If you work for me & demonstrate resourcefulness, I will love you forever. There are rules though. Get briefed properly. Ask questions. Pitch your ideas. If you can work under your own initiative & provide results for your organisation you will fast-track your career.
True in life and business! You don’t always get to choose your colleagues. But if you run a business, make this a priority. Positivity unlocks success. It is key to our mental health, reduces stress, anxiety & depression. Positive people see the potential & that is invaluable!
Your family matters more than your business! Spend quality time with them. When your kids grow up-call/text them often. Don’t become an isolated business owner. Nurture friendships. If you don’t, no one will share the good times with you. In which case, what’s it all been for?
If you are a business owner/leader, you are a ‘work’ parent for your people. Parents nurture their children-mentor your staff & shape them into the best version of themselves. Protect your people, like a parent. Aim to create independent members of staff. Help them develop/grow.
You know it’s just a safety blanket, right? It’s also not your script. Don’t be lazy and use it as a teleprompter. You know what you need to say. Learn it. PRACTICE! You should only ever use PP to punctuate your presentation with singular, powerful images.#powerpointpresentation
