I absolutely love Tom Sietsema but no, yelling at someone with less power than you is abuse (and the sign of a manager who doesn't know how to get things done any other way)
Employers will watch us suffer psychologically and even die from things they could’ve helped prevent through basic measures but get pissed when we don’t answer at 11pm on a Sunday or just drop our lives to pick up a shift when they’re short staffed on a SCHEDULED day off.
We’re not stealing. We’re holding our greedy employers to their word. They said we work certain hours? Well outside those hours we don’t. They described the job they were paying this lousy wage for? Well if you want us to do different jobs pay us different wages.
Requiring people to be available for contact at all times in non-emergency meeting is wage theft. Requiring or pressuring people to answer calls/emails off work hours is wage theft. Requiring them to make purchases just to be minimally able to work their jobs is wage theft.
To trendy reporters out there helping to scare people it’s not #QuietQuitting. It’s quietly no longer allowing your employer to commit wage theft. The pandemic showed employers will flat out let us die. You get what you pay for and they’re only paying 62.4% of what they should.
My favourite joke was ‘Trinity the Tuck…she’s been cancelled more than AJ And The Queen’ Ru went off screaming laughing and then we had fun talking about it in the critiques.
If the interview were really designed to find the best person for the job, most of the interview would be spent talking about the job.
A fearful manager doesn’t care whether you can do the job nearly as much as they care about the question, Will you bend to my will?
Sometimes I think that when I'm ready to stop writing Ask a Manager, I'll start a service where I just call up people's employers and read them the riot act about whatever brand of crappy behavior they're indulging in.
How People Will Try to Neutralize You at Work
1. Offer unsolicited advice that includes “tone it down”
2. Try to knock you off balance: “Some people don’t like you”
3. Interrupt you
4. Stop inviting you to meetings
5. Remind you at every opportunity how new/junior you are
