@NCRegister 3/ The faithful are right that some pentitents take too long. Some priests allow people to go on too long. But the faithful also need to know that we all have to be docile to the Spirit. And when one acts in persona Christi, sometimes Christ's outreach is norm-breaking.

@NCRegister As a priest at a mega confession site, we work to move people along 2 min or less. Most regulars easily comply. Occasionally, people needless talk too much, and we gently cut them off. BUT, there are times where the Spirit tells you that this one needs however long it takes.

@NCRegister 2/ In the same way, I don't give counsel to the majority of regular penitents - I often give psalms as penances that I think are applicable to their need. But the sometimes as a priest you just know when more HAS to be said.

@BicycleSocials @MarcelLeJeune Our archdiocese has a parish twinning process for this purpose. It is encouraged, but voluntary, which is the struggle with parishes, groups, and individuals: charity must be freely offered, not compelled.

@Di_bear @MarcelLeJeune Many do, it is just not structural. And dioceses try to provide some means for redistribution. The main need is developing a stewardship culture. People have a strange sense of how much (little) they can part with, which comes from a culture of afluence across our society.

@MarcelLeJeune The real struggle is when priests are quietly supplementing the parish budget and preaching on stewardship. You want to point out that a priest finds a way to give more than so many families with MUCH greater discretionary income, but you don't want to come off as "bragging".

@MarcelLeJeune Many priests are sadly among the top 10-20 financial givers to their parishes due to a lack of stewardship culture and the need the meet the call of the gospel.

@MarcelLeJeune I didn't take it as an attack on priest's pay. I agree that it is a conundrum, and staff needs to be paid a living wage. The problem is that affluent parishes can afford to pay staff more AND often have less demands from poor in need. Poor parishes have the opposite situation.
