Thank you for raising this, and I want to answer you directly, publicly, because you deserve that and so does everyone reading.

What happened to you is not right. It is not normal. It is illegal. If you are a valid NHIS member and you were charged for services and medicines the scheme covers, that is a co-payment, and no credentialed facility, public or private, is permitted to do it. Nearly GH¢400 out of your pocket at a government hospital while holding a valid card is exactly the practice we are working to end.

Two things you should know. This year alone, the NHIA has paid approximately GH¢1.46 billion in claims to facilities across the country, public, private and mission, so that they are reimbursed and have no reason to charge you at the counter. And we have reviewed and increased tariffs, which had been left untouched for years, so that reimbursement now reflects the real cost of treating conditions like malaria, medicines included. The excuse for charging illegally is gone.

So please let us make this right. Call our call centre or send us a DM with your receipts and the facility's name, and we will act on it.

And to everyone reading: this is exactly what you must report. Do not pay quietly and walk away. Tell us, with your evidence, and we will deal with it. That is the only way we end it, together. 🇬🇭

The late Dr. Jason Arday had a dissertation committee made up of professors. He passed his comprehensive exams, defended his proposal, and had his dissertation vetted. He then defended it before a committee and passed. He became a PhD holder by the standards of his committee, department, and an accredited university.

Then, “academically righteous” critics, especially the highly unprofessional british media decided: “You know what? You plagiarized your dissertation.”

Was Jason supposed to know better than the professors on his committee, the very people who were supposed to mentor, guide, review, and evaluate his work?

To make you “academically righteous” critics happy, he resigned, but you wouldn’t let him be. You kept at it until he passed.

We cannot continue to reduce the value of three to five years (or more) of teaching, learning, research, service, and professional development to a pile of papers.

My final take on this: By the time my committee, comprised of five professors with ~5 to 20+ years of post-PhD research experience, approves my dissertation as meeting high academic standards and I’m conferred with a PhD, anyone who thinks otherwise after my graduation can go hug a nearby transformer.

Rest in Peace, Jason. And I hope your tragic passing sparks the uncomfortable conversations necessary to chart a new path for academia across the world.
