@schelluminium no 💕 you just replied to a tweet of someone saying don’t talk over people this pertains to by telling me to? not?? are u good in the head like lmfao. yes omar is happy i get that but he’s happy abt engagement, he’d be happy if people were frying eggs to his sound respectfully
doing that “fit into a world like this” trend when you’ve never not fit into the culture you were born into is a bit weird to me. like sure everyone has had some struggle or another in life but this is not about someone being mean to you in kindergarden, it’s about not fitting in
yes music is subjective but this excuse is used all the time about songs that are very explicitly about racism to avoid having any feeling of discomfort when engaging with the lyrics 😭 the exact same shit happened with your best american girl by mitski
@tina14jan this line this song is not for them. the very essence of the problem is you trying to talk over someone that’s actually? dealt with this in their life. someone this is personal to, who has been thru it. what right do u have to tell me how to feel about something actually +
@tina14jan taking the one song talking about this very struggle and turning it into something to appease the masses? surely squashing down the meaning and making the people that feel heard unheard by washing it out into generic non conformity should not be the way to go 🤣
@tina14jan personal to me? i understand the trend wasnt meant in a malicious way and that omar is excited abt any engagement but this song is about culturally not fitting in, like 🙏🏻 actually listen to the words. obviously theres lots of different ways of not fitting in but why are we +
@haniwhatever@officialrudberg ok and as a latino raised in europe im telling u that to me this is dumb. there’s other ways to talk abt the song and make something out of it, pretending you struggled in the same ways when you were raised in a country built for you ain’t it
@haniwhatever@officialrudberg have you…. listened to the song? like sure as a general assessment that’s true but this line and this song is very much about culturally not fitting in and being an immigrant/having immigrant parents and the struggle associated with that.
@haniwhatever@officialrudberg sometimes life isn’t about the algorithm 💕 genuinely it feels so demeaning and downputting to see white europeans dress up and act like the oppressed when this line is very much not about them and the fact they’ve fitted into their culture and country since before they were born
to make friends and getting picked on because your name is hard to pronounce. not belonging even tho your parents have put so much effort and struggle to see you grow up in a place that was supposed to give you better chances and a happy childhood.
are both a part of you. not eating foods you crave bc they don’t exist where you’ve been placed, always being the odd one out for the way you speak and your parents (and maybe yourself) struggling to learn an entirely new language. not getting invited to birthdays, struggling
like both are part of me but no matter where you are they always would push me to the side that i wasn’t it at that moment. even my family, friends in school or whatever. part of both and yet not belonging in either.
the lyrics omar posted feel deeply personal (to him obviously but also to me). the struggle of growing up not belonging anywhere, not being latino enough and not being european enough to fit in in either community fully is so disheartening.
