@milkywayoni yeah but theoretically anyone can become a sorcerer right? Or maybe you only pass on your sorcery genes if you become a sorcerer. Epigenetics or something. Though epigenetic inheritance in humans is still up for debate I think (pretending to understand genetics)
@hey_its_wei Sorcery Bureau: agrees to what amounts to selling a young woman in exchange for a vague ceasefire that also just so happens to be politically convenient for them
Sorcery Bureau: “Well, she’s fine with it, so that absolves us of all moral culpability!!!”
i hope this doesn’t come across as Kunishige glazing (because he loves Chiaki but his choices are informed by his hubris and trauma), but I like that the govt keeps saying “This is Chiaki’s choice!!!!” pretending that if she’d refused they wouldn’t have made her go anyway
@itsLucky_07 Yeah I tried to do that too… Thankfully it was the only required reading I actively loathed. Some of them were meh, some of them I loved… But The Crucible just sucks 😢
@itsLucky_07 Yes yes, plus irl Abigail was ELEVEN (or 12) and irl John Proctor was in his 60s at the time of the Salem witch trials, so the decision to turn her into a 17yo seductress is just. I’m stopping there
@itsLucky_07 I appreciate the craft but it imo it fails as an allegory (which is its whole point!) because McCarthyism was enacted by senators in a position of power; the young girls are in a system that actively oppresses them. And Arthur Miller was really weird about changing irl Abigail 😐
I taught American Literature at an inner city school and the best creative project I ever got was a SasuNaru AU of The Crucible (with the characters’ names changed, like I wouldn’t notice the Kyuubi lol). Thank you, student. You made The Crucible bearable for me that year
@rinovellas I really wasn’t but thanks lol. I will say that the only reason I got caught was because all the caterpillars went through metamorphosis around the same time… My mother still talks about mothmageddon
confession: I used to steal (and return!) books from my elementary school library because the ones I wanted to read weren’t the right reading level (either above or below where I’d tested). In hindsight, I’m pretty sure my teacher knew and never said anything lol
