⚠️ “A teenager from a neighbouring village carried a PFM-1 mine in his pocket all the way to Izium,” explains Maksym. At 15 years old, this #Ukrainian student has to face the presence of #mines and #UXO in his daily life.

⛰️ In the Rasht Valley, #Tajikistan, mine clearance presents particular challenges due to steep hillsides & uneven terrain. Despite these difficulties, FSD #deminers continue working to help make land safer for communities living in the region.
Supported by PATRIP Foundation.
Theatre taught Mykyta #creativity, and he uses those skills every day as he speaks to adults and children about the dangers posed by explosive hazards.
Working with #children always calls for a fresh approach — because what works for some doesn't work for others.
🎭Before joining FSD, Mykyta worked in #theatre and vocal performance.
Today, he is a leading specialist in #RiskEducation in #Chernihiv, Ukraine, helping communities stay #safe from explosive hazards.
Mykyta hopes for a safer future — and helps build it every day.
🐝 Today, FSD Director Hansjörg Eberle attended the #WorldBeeDay event in #Geneva.
For many conflict-affected rural communities, beekeeping supports livelihoods and recovery. Humanitarian #MineAction helps make agricultural land safe again for farming and #beekeeping activities.
🎓 Five Ukrainian FSD #deminers completed IMAS EOD Level 3 training at MAT Kosovo #Training Centre after three weeks of intensive theory and practice.
Their certification ceremony was attended by His Excellency Oleksandr Lytvynenko, Ambassador of #Ukraine to Serbia.
🔹 Robocut S300: a remote-controlled machine used to clear dense vegetation
🔹 Deminer's Kit: specialised tools for clearing soil, checking suspicious areas, & handling explosive hazards
Together, these tools help FSD teams make land #safe again for communities in #Ukraine.
🛠️ In the #Ukraine, FSD #deminers use specialised manual clearance #tools:
🔹 EBEX 422 metal detector: lightweight but highly sensitive, capable of detecting microscopic metal particles
🔹 UPEX 740 M large loop metal detector: to survey large areas & locate deeply buried objects
🤝 FSD teams in Kharkiv region, #Ukraine, welcomed representatives from @WFPUkraine to observe humanitarian #demining operations and learn more about the challenges faced by #deminers in the field.
Together, our efforts help #farmers safely return to their land.
⚽“War affects physical and emotional landscapes, and its impacts are felt for years after. Local #sport can help heal these wounds.” — Sven Daniel Wolfe, Professor at the University of Neuchâtel.

🩵 In #Mindanao, Philippines, an FSD Officer speaks with a #survivor of an explosive ordnance #accident, listening as he shares how a single moment changed his life.
Through such conversations, FSD teams aim to gain a better understanding of the needs of those affected.
🚫 In #Chernihiv, Ukraine, people sometimes look for scrap metal to earn money without realising the #danger. But any suspicious object can be deadly.
The FSD teams in Chernihiv run risk education sessions to teach communities how to stay safe when they encounter such an object.
🧭 Things Won’t Go South
A simple but #essential tool: the #compass.
Used alongside GPS, it helps #survey teams navigate safely, identify reference points and record accurate information in the field.

🛠️Across #Ukraine, @SESU_UA operate around 100 machines in support of #demining — increasing efficiency of clearance operations. But maintaining them remains a challenge.
FSD is supporting the development of a #repair hub — reducing downtime & improving operational readiness.
FSD supports this progress by providing practical #training, including a germination and seeding workshop, which demonstrates the complete lettuce cultivation process to the greenhouse #community. This gives participants the skills they need to sustain and grow production.
🌿In Armero-Guayabal, #Colombia, the #hydroponic community #greenhouse is producing around 600 plants each week, helping strengthen #FoodSecurity through fresh vegetables and fruits.
The project supports conflict victims in rebuilding their livelihoods and fostering resilience.
Today, 17 May, marks ten years since Mark Belford, our dedicated colleague, tragically lost his life while carrying out demining activities near Kirkuk, Iraq. We pay tribute to Mark and to all deminers who have given their lives to this noble profession.
🎬 Step by Step began filming several years ago in #Ukraine. Since then, #deminers like Serhii have continued their work in humanitarian #MineAction with FSD.
👉 In this short video, Serhii reflects on the documentary and his journey today: https://t.co/EAjz9hqfdE
