Historical data shows an interesting pattern. The idea that “the market is at an all-time high, so it’s too late to buy stocks” has not always been true.
An all-time high does not necessarily mean the market is overvalued or that a decline must follow.
For example, an index may rise from 5,000 to 5,100 and set a new record. If it later climbs to 5,500, 6,000, and 6,500, it will continue setting new all-time highs along the way.
Since 1989, investments made when the S&P 500 reached a new all-time high have generated the following average subsequent returns:
• 1 year: +13.6%
• 3 years: +46%
• 5 years: +82%
This does not mean you should “always buy at record highs.” It simply shows that the idea “the market is at a record high, so it’s already too late to invest” has historically not been a reliable approach.
