Sobre los más recientes resultados de la prueba PISA que evidencian un desplome de la compresión lectora a nivel mundial, veamos los siguientes puntos:

1. El problema se ha enfocado mal. En muchos países se habla de una falla del sistema educativo. Lo cual me parece bastante superficial. Como si el sistema educativo funcionara al margen del resto de estructuras sociales. Esto es, como si no fuera un subsistema de un sistema de dominación social más amplio. En ese sentido, que la compresión lectora se haya desplomado a nivel mundial, en especial en los países latinoamericanos, no es una falla del sistema sino que se trata de un éxito del sistema. Porque precisamente es un sistema que no requiere ciudadanos sino consumidores y ahora con las redes sociales simples usuarios. La persona carente de compresión lectora y, en consecuencia, de pensamiento crítico es más fácil de dominar. Hay mucha más probabilidades de que asuma lo que existente como inevitable y de que reproduzca desde su propia subjetividad el sentido común dominante.

2. Las redes sociales han destruido el fundamento de la democracia moderna que es la existencia de individuos capaces de pensar autónomamente. Y que, desde ahí, puedan establecer marcos comunes de referencia que a su vez habiliten una discusión pública razonable basada en verdades compartidas. Estas redes, en cambio, nos aíslan en nichos de creencias y funcionan estimulando emociones. Con lo que cada vez nos entendemos menos y ya la verdad ni siquiera importa. Lo que importan son las creencias previas de cada nicho.

3. La IA es un proyecto ideológico y económico conducente a construir poder a favor de una pequeñísima minoría de individuos estadounidenses. Como muy bien lo explican Karen Hao y Katie Crawford, investigadoras norteamericanas que han publicados los dos libros más contundentes sobre las ideología, intereses y personalidades que hay detrás de las cinco empresas que controlan el desarrollo de la IA generativa de uso comercial. Por ello, en lo que atañe al impacto que está teniendo a nivel social, esta tecnología provoca mucho más daño que cualquier otra cosa. Implica no solo un desafío medioambiental (por los gigantescos recursos de agua y energía que demanda) sino que también un ataque abierto a la inteligencia humana. A la posibilidad de que podamos tener un futuro humano y vivible.

4. El dato más importante de los resultados PISA es que la compresión lectora se desploma por igual entre los estudiantes ricos y pobres. El uso indiscriminado de tecnologías digitales entre los jóvenes crea una suerte de piso de igualdad en la ignorancia. Hoy un jovencito adinerado y uno humilde son igual de ignorantes. Incapaces de entender un texto de cierta extensión; no pueden concentrarse; no pueden vincular ideas ni fuentes; y, por tanto no pueden conceptualizar la realidad más allá de lo aparente. Es decir, son analfabetos funcionales. ¿Saben cuál es el sector político que más crece especialmente entre los jóvenes varones? Averiguan y se les aclararán muchas cosas.

P.D. Recién graduado de la universidad trabajé varios años en el ámbito de políticas dirigidas a la educación superior y, especialmente, en proyectos vinculados a aumentar la calidad de las IESS (instituciones de educación superior). Digo esto porque cualquiera que haya trabajado en esos temas sabe de las críticas profundas que existen a la prueba PISA. No sobredimensiono esas pruebas. Pero estas pruebas sí sirven como instrumento de comparación. Lo cual es muy importante. Por ello creo que a juzgar por los recientes resultados de la misma se puede decir que lo algunos venimos diciendo acerca del embrutecimiento que provoca el uso intensivo de aparatos digitales no es solo una intuición.
