i hate what we’ve done to nerdiness. the average nerd isn’t even smart now they just like slop. they watch long youtube videos where someone explains obscure star wars expanded universe lore and half the time the guy in the video didn’t even read it he’s just reading wookiepedia.
Gunn deciding to go full American exceptionalism with his version of Superman is so frustrating. Extremely hacky to give Supergirl all the angst of losing krypton while everything good and heroic about Clark is attributed to his American upbringing. Just plain evil.
the Marty Scorsese AI thing really just underscores how much this issue really is 100% becoming a generational divide. the Olds are living in an infoscape that totally celebrates AI as an advancement. they think the young naysayers are just a loud minority being overly critical
cannot stress enough how disappointing it is that Martin Scorsese is collaborating with an AI company and putting a stain on his name so late in his life and career. he is like the last person i’d expect this from
My takeaway is a negative one: this tells me that Movies will soon learn the lesson of Music: they will no longer spend the time/money to DEVELOP new stars…they’ll shift that labor over to the creatives themselves, & only fund artists who’ve ALREADY created their own fanbases.
Every time a new popular horror thing is released I am forced against my will to listen to the horror takes of people who exclusively watch slashers and maybe a Jordan Peele movie if they’re feeling a little dangerous
Powerscaling is the idea that the abstract and ill defined concept of "fictional power" is quantifiable and comparable. This is on it's face ridiculous.
So people who enjoy it have to retreat to "no, no, powerscaling is just when you tell a good story or whatever".
Saying "powerscaling matters to a story, because stories use power disparity to create stakes" is like saying "Shipping" matters because stories can have romantic relationships
the problem with this powerscaling discourse is that powerscalers want to
make their perversion respectable by pretending it's just the same as having stakes when it's blindingly obvious that it isn't
