I’m not going to police how anyone chooses to be a “fan”. People are free to have whatever opinions they want. But some takes from people who claim to be Azzi fans make me raise an eyebrow because, stripped of the language around them, they sound remarkably similar to the people who want to see her diminished.

There are people who seem almost invested in a particular version of Azzi, one who stays within certain boundaries, accepts certain roles and never becomes more than what they’ve already decided she is. They call it being realistic. Sometimes I wonder whether it’s actually discomfort with the possibility that she might outgrow every box they’ve comfortably placed her in.

Because if you genuinely believe in someone, why would the possibility of them wanting more, developing more or becoming more feel like something that needs to be resisted?

It’s fascinating to watch in real time.
