Everybody is talking about the porn ban but nobody is discussing the literal fact that the government has already extended the censorship to cover multiple SFW hobby spaces, multiple sites discussing quitting smoking/drinking and are actively looking at ways to censor Wikipedia.
People are either accidentally or purposely being ignorant about this and just present it as a porn ban as if this won’t have effects on access to sexual education, historical information or drug harm reduction
Hell, we’re already seeing people Palestine stuff get blocked
Any censorship is bad. Locking websites behind ID verification is crazy. Mastercard and Visa controlling which games we play is awful. Fuck this endless puritanical bullshit.
Just got reminded that I wrote this FOUR YEARS AGO about the potential authoritarian consequences of the then Online Safety Bill (now Act).
And oh look, it’s all coming true. What a surprise.
Buried in my thread, but want to stress this. We know calls led to MasterCard customer service escalating the censorship issue to MasterCard HQ. And now we know Visa has a dedicated backend team around addressing the Steam / itchio adult content policy. Something is going on BTS
It. Never. Stops. At. Porn.
Anybody who thinks crap like this will help protect kids are not understanding that most government regulation involving safety is always a cover for more control.
We are watching the UK replicate 1984. And kids will still find ways to gain access.
I have yet to hear a good argument from any conservative as to why its inappropriate to show LGBTQ+ relationships in anything other than its “sinful”. Cartoons for kids don’t end in sex, they kiss. So if a man and a woman can kiss, a man and a man can and a woman and a woman can.
You can no longer make games tackling subjects like depression, self harm, alcoholism or extreme ideologies, which includes any horror games featuring cults. Atleast not if you want to get any money from your work.
I don't think people quite understand it isn't just about nsfw stuff it's the fact the govt shouldn't decide what people get to see, it Might cross a thin line and anything that's reasonable nutters could see as "adult" and block it, stuff like sex ed resources or lgbtq resources
This leak is all the proof you need that forcing websites and apps to store sensitive user information to verify ID is only a liability and a danger to the public
