My Dad didn't know his heritage and now he's late 😭

He had Khoisan and Boer blood running in his veins but no one spoke of it because I believe his father was a result of a Boer who abused a bush woman 🥺

Hussein Chota Ameen... my mother's father. My maternal grandfather.

Apparently he owned a shop or shops in Wasbank, where he met my grandmother & my mom was conceived. His family is known to be based around Pietermaritzburg.

Based on his name, the assumption would be that his ancestry is from the Gujarat state of India, & that the family either came to South Africa as some of the 152,000 indentured workers brought into KZN or as part of the paying traders who willing traveled to SA for business purposes.

My grandfather had a wife & a daughter with his wife. The daughter was named Rehana & had 5 sons. My grandfather had 2 other "external" kids that I'm aware of: my aunt, Rita, & my uncle, William from 2 different mothers.

Part of the stories we aren't told in SA are the hidden mixed-race children of Indian or Arab or Portuguese or Greek or Chinese or Taiwanese or Lebanese or Dutch or British men... partly, due to the laws of Apartheid which forbade interracial mixing & partly due to men who refused to take ownership of their offspring, especially if conceived outside of marriage. Worse if conceived via rape.

I wish I could know my grandfather's story fully. Not to judge him, but to understand myself & my lineage better. Particularly for the sake of my kids. He passed away before I was born & my mom has fond memories of spending time with him as a teenager.

It's said that my paternal side, oMlotshwa, hail from Lesotho... whether this means I have Sotho heritage, is something I hope my research will uncover.
