Launched on June 19, the gallery was positioned as a localized answer to Madame Tussauds, with figures of Filipino stars and icons such as Liza Macuja-Elizalde, Ara Mina, Gladys Reyes, Michael Flores, Bayani Agbayani, Hidilyn Diaz, Michael V., Paolo Contis, Ashtine Olviga, Wilbert Ross, Bea Binene, Pops Fernandez, Ruffa Gutierrez, and others. More figures, including Dolphy, are reportedly in production. The idea should have been beautiful. A space celebrating Filipino icons should be welcome. Not every Filipino family can fly abroad to visit a famous wax museum. A local version, if done well, could have been accessible, entertaining, and even culturally meaningful. But that is the key phrase: if done well. Based on the viral photos and public reactions, many of the statues looked unfinished, unflattering, and in some cases, horrendous. Netizens called the exhibit a “Temu version” of Madame Tussauds. Others joked that the figures looked tired, distorted, or frightening. The Pops Fernandez figure drew particular backlash, with some fans calling for “justice” for the Concert Queen before the statue was reportedly removed for improvement. Project head June Galang acknowledged the criticism, saying some statues “aren’t quite perfect yet” and that the team is working to improve and refine them. But he also defended the project as a starting point, a labor of love, and a tribute to local icons. That defense is exactly the problem. Filipinos are always told to be patient with mediocrity when it is packaged as effort. We are told to support local, even when local means rushed. We are told to appreciate the attempt, even when the attempt results in public embarrassment. We are told not to criticize because artists worked hard, as if hard work automatically excuses bad output. But call a spade a spade: many of these statues are ugly. They are not merely imperfect. But not everyone wants to invest the money, time, research, craftsmanship, quality control, and humility required to produce something worthy of comparison. So we get “pwede na.” Pwede na because people will still line up. Pwede na because the attraction is free with a regular Star City ticket. Pwede na because even ridicule creates foot traffic. Pwede na because Filipinos have been conditioned to accept inferior versions of global concepts and call them “ours.” But local should not mean less. If anything, local should mean more care. More respect. More responsibility. More awareness that when you put Filipino faces on display, you are also putting Filipino taste, Filipino artistry, and Filipino standards on display.
