This one has lived rent-free in my head for a couple months.

Wirtz was among the leaders for wingers and attacking midfielders in Europe for deep shots assisted p90 (passes into a 20 yard radius of the goal that result in a shot for the receiver).

But in the 38th percentile for open play big chances created.

These two things are obviously highly correlated... passing the ball into dangerous areas and teammates taking shots will often result in big chances.

But Wirtz was an outlier to this - his passes into deep dangerous areas rarely led to a big chance.

Why?

I think some combination of:

- his passes skewed to being closer to 20 yards out rather than right into the truly dangerous areas
- minimal help from the other attackers converting medium chances to high value chances with their post-reception movement
- himself and the team in general having next to no solutions with the ball in the final third and all the time in the world

His mark of 1.51 deep shots assisted to 0.19 op bcc is the worst ratio of someone with his level of deep shots assisted, but some similar ones over the past five years:

- Isco '24/25: 1.28, 0.17
- Luis Diaz '23/24: 1.36, 0.17
- Jeremy Doku '23/24: 1.58, 0.28
- Jack Grealish '21/22: 1.36, 0.23
- Martin Ødegaard '21/22: 1.32, 0.19

Not unheard of for central creators and/or attackers in a high-possession PL side to have a poor ratio of high value chances created from medium value chances created.

All of them (expect Isco who didn't play enough minutes this season) corrected to the norm the following season. The % change for the two metrics in the following season:

- Martin Ødegaard '22/23: -9%, +80%
- Jack Grealish '22/23: -26%, +109%
- Jeremy Doku '24/25: -40%, +71%
- Luis Diaz '24/25: -21%, +77%

All four of them (too small of a sample to make actual conjectures but still) saw decreases in deep shots assisted, increases in op big chances created, and the average increase was about 3.5x the average decrease.

This stands to reason: the smaller sample of action number is higher variance, so as the numbers normalize, this is the one that moves the most. But again, n=4.

Also worth noting, all four of the PL attackers on this list were experiencing some kind of a first:

- MØ's second season at Arsenal, but first as a regular starter
- Grealish's and Doku's first seasons at City
- Diaz's first season back from the devastating knee injury

I would rather Wirtz have truly hit the ground running, and I did have some doubts (more positives for sure, but some reservations considering the price vs. Cherki) that he would be the answer, but overall far from a disastrous season.

All this to say: I'm optimistic about year 2 :)
