Update 3:
Nala is HOME!
As mentioned before, she was able to avoid having surgery and is doing a lot better. This incident does put her at risk of having it happen again in the future, but right now I want to focus on the current expenses and raise funds for these. Unless she has another case of torsion, surgery is not required right now, but it is something I will want to explore in the future as a preventative; being able to plan it out in advance will also mean the cost will be a lot less than it would be should it happen at another inopportune time. In the case of such an unfortunate event, I will of course have to alter the goal again, but I am hoping this is something that can be worried about at a much later date.
Due to her not requiring surgery, the goal has been HALVED. Obviously this is incredible news as it puts us so much closer to the goal and alleviates a lot of financial hardship, but it is still VERY costly so I am still going to request that people continue to share the GoFundMe and my tweet, and throwing a few bucks our way if you are in a position to do so. We appreciate everything that's been done for us so much.
Right now I'm going to focus on spreading the word locally and online through my neighborhood and various groups that may be able to help. Nala's birthday is on July 7th, and I hope to be able to have time set aside both to celebrate her turning 2, but also to dedicate time and effort into helping raise as much of the remaining money as possible. We would greatly appreciate whatever support can be lent during this time, and I will post more about this in the coming weeks.
Thank you so much for everyone who has helped and continues to help, whether you are donating or spreading the word. When I initially got estimates on the cost, I broke down due to how insurmountable it seemed, and had to make the choice between a bill that could be as high, or even higher than $16,000, or my dog's life. I am glad we have so many kind people we can depend on during this difficult time, and am emotional even as I write this. I hope we continue receiving your support in the future, and I will continue to post updates on Nala both on the GoFundMe, and on my Twitter.
Thank you again, it means the world to Nala, to me, and everyone who has been lucky enough to become friends with her.
Posted as an update as a reply in the initial post, but I'll repeat it again here since I think more people will see it that way:
UPDATE 2: I got to visit with Nala a few hours ago, she was very excited and was very alert, took her on a short walk and her belly had pretty much returned to normal.
I talked with the doctor, and it seems her spleen DID untwist, and not just that, it had reduced in size, almost back to normal. This means it is once again receiving proper blood flow. Her red blood cells have also recovered, and her platelets are actively improving as well.
After explaining this, the doctor gave me two options, both with pros and cons to the point neither one is better than the other; first option is to go through with the surgery, which would prevent this from happening in the future, as dogs who have had this happen before are more likely to have it happen in the future. Second option is keep her overnight, and bring her home tomorrow so long as nothing happens.
After discussing it, I have opted to bring her home tomorrow. Right now the expenses are incredibly high and I do not want to put her through the stress of surgery unless she absolutely needs it. I know what signs to watch for in the case it does happen again, and am prepared to bring her back if needed. All I will say is that I hope we can count on people once more if that happens.
Also as a result of that, not going through with the surgery means a SIGNIFICANT amount of the cost is dropped; the 16k the goal had been set for was a high estimate given by the doctor. Due to extra exams since she was found not to likely not need the surgery, those estimates went up $1000, HOWEVER, those extra exams also determined surgery is not necessary right now, which does save me an immense amount of money and is much easier to fund as a result.
Another good thing is if she DOES have this happen again, it will hopefully not happen in the dead of night so I don't need to deal with emergency vet costs, so final cost can be dropped a lot even if it does. I also know it's a lot easier if things are spaced out a bit more if it does happen again, so I'd much rather ask for a lot less now and the rest later if things prove unfortunate enough for that to happen.
Once again, thanks everyone for all the support. It's greatly appreciated, and I'm glad I had good news to share to all of you. I will state that despite the surgery reducing costs a lot, her expenses are STILL very high, and even though we shouldn't need to raise nearly as much, I will still be asking for help in terms of donation and spreading the GoFundMe.
We are very grateful for all the assistance that has been given, and I hope to bring her home with me tomorrow.
The GoFundMe for my dog, Nala, is live.
I posted about it earlier, but I had to rush her to the emergency vet at 2 AM this morning after noticing her belly was slightly distended and firm. She was given painkillers and given fluids intravenously while getting X-Rays, which showed that her spleen had twisted, apparently spontaneously. Due to this, she will either need to receive surgery to get it untwisted, or even removed. I had lost my previous dog to what I believe was bloat so I was very paranoid about this, and I'm glad I was. I also just lost my cat of 18 years last month and I don't want to lose Nala too.
Nala deserves a long life like the one I was able to provide my cat, and I hope people feel touched enough to donate if they are able to. I had started dogsitting Nala when she was still a puppy last year for a family friend. Last summer, they were no longer able to keep her, and since we had already become close, I took her in. For nearly a year now, she's been a constant companion to me, and even my cats. She is turning 2 in less than 3 weeks. I want her to make it to her 2nd birthday, and many more after that.
The good news is the surgery will make such a thing happening again outright impossible, and they will perform a procedure that will also make it incredibly unlikely for her stomach to twist in the future as well. Not just that, but post-recovery, she is expected to be fully recovered with no adverse effects.
The bad news is the cost. I have received an estimate from the vet as high as $16,000. I have looked at plans to help with this immense cost, but the best I can do is receive an amount of time to pay it off before interest kicks in, and there's very little I can do to mitigate the cost itself. I do not make nearly enough to afford this, even factoring what savings I do have, it does not come close. These expenses include her initial exam, her surgery, and her post-care treatment.
Nala was born on 7/7. What should be a lucky number. Unfortunately she has to deal with something like this before she's even 2, and it's not fair to her, as it would be unfair to any other dog. Nala is the sweetest, most loyal dog. She loves to play, go for walks, and meet new people and animals, even if she can be shy sometimes. She has a lot of love and years left to give, and I want to be there for her as she's been there for me. I do not like asking for money, but I need help, and I feel lf I don't do this it would be failing her, and she doesn't deserve this.
Please, if you have ANY money you can part with to help us, we would be immensely grateful. If you can't donate, spreading this tweet and the GoFundMe would mean a lot as well.
I also work in video editing; if people need any sort of work done, I will do what I can, as anything I get will help to pay for her procedures. Any sort of online work I could do would also be helpful.
The goal may be altered depending on the operation; it will likely be less than it currently is, but I have no way of knowing until she is recovered.
Thank you so much for reading.

Much love to Alex Pretti and Renee Good—but remember—ICE has killed 9 people in 2026. You know the names of the 2 white people they've killed.
ICE has also killed a Black man named Keith Porter, a Cambodian named Parady La, and five Latinos named Heber Sanchaz Domínguez, Victor Manuel Diaz, Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres, and Geraldo Lunas Campos.
ICE is on pace to kill more than 100 people this year. Abolish ICE. Impeach Noem. Prosecute those who committed these crimes.
liberal zionism has made this girlypop community turn into gamergate style islamaphobes who think every muslim dude is a terrorist ready slit your throat at a moments notice. no one will even stop and consider how insanely racist this is.
