Another top session in the nursery with some of our volunteers today. Heated discussion on carbon colonialism and investing landscape restoration projects in the hands of the right people. Better than being at Hay Festival! Oh, and we got a few thousand saplings in the ground.

We planted 630m of new hedging during the last planting season. Hedges are goddam amazing, particularly as habitat: for starters, it is estimated that hedges are home to some 80% of our woodland birds.

We've been experimenting with donated sheep fleece as mulch to suppress weeds, retain moisture and reduce water consumption. So far it's working well with the Oaks planted in lines but not with Elderberry on our windy exposed site. Needs rain or watering to embed the fleece first

After last years clear felling of conifers the eastern valley looks much more open. We have been planting native trees in amongst the felled conifer to protect the trees from sheep grazing but it will be a few years before they become visible from a distance. #trees#planting

Thank you to all the volunteers who attended our High Camp. Volunteers were helping 'free the trees' by removing vole guards. This involves crawling around on hands and knees to find hidden guards, so well done to all involved in this effort!

Hand pulling the plants is the most effective method of removing Himalayan Balsam in order to restore the original biodiversity of our river banks and woodland. It allows remaining native plants to take advantage of the additional light and exposed mineral soil for their seeds 🌿
