A small Japanese AI lab, @SakanaAILabs, just dropped Fugu, a multi-agent orchestration system that sits on top of multiple models and routes tasks intelligently, all behind a single API. Basically, internally it decides which models to call, verifies results, and synthesizes a coherent response. So it look like one model but under the hood it's collective intelligence.

This hits home for me because last year I experimented with using a SLM to dispatch tasks to specialized models, routing code work to coding models, research to reasoning models, etc. But I ran out of time before I could take it far. And now Sakana is proving it at production scale.

The key insight is the same one I've held for a while: 1 model ≠ every solution. Sometimes, different tasks genuinely need different strengths and an orchestration layer that routes dynamically, verifies outputs, and adapts in real time is really helpful.

The main downside i see tho is output degradation. Since you're dependent on the weights of many different models and you never know which quantized version a closed source provider is going to hand you.
