Taylor’s 1,100-a-day figure is not “gross arrivals.” It tracks official ABS net population growth: about 393,000 in the year to March 2026, or roughly 1,076 people a day. Net overseas migration supplied 292,100 of that. That is still well above the pre-COVID normal of around 230–250k.

ABS tells people to use NOM, not Overseas Arrivals and Departures, when talking about migration. OAD counts every tourist, returning resident and short trip. NOM counts people who stay 12 months or more and actually add to the resident population. That is the number that hits housing, rents, schools and infrastructure.

Labor ran the post-COVID peak of 538k NOM, then spent years above 400k before the recent drop. Calling 292k “tinkering” while young Australians cannot find a place to live is the actual spin. Returning citizens and holidaymakers do not explain the housing shortage. Persistent high NOM does.

You’re not exposing a statistical trick. You’re running cover for a government that promised lower numbers and delivered the opposite for most of its term.
