His Tribal Politics that led to today’s unwritten zoning arrangements in Nigerian politics .

I recently wrote about Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe how he took steps to glue Nigeria together to be indivisible so we are stuck to together for ever . You see both Awolowo and Azikiwe unknowingly left footprints in Nigerian politics that we are most probably stuck with for ever .

Who brought tribalism to Nigerian politics ? Yep Chief Obafemi Awolowo .

What you are not told is that it was JUSTIFIED tribalism because Nnamdi Azikiwe brought what is commonly known as ‘Igbo sense’ into politics .

How Tribalism Started.

The 1951 "Carpet Crossing" Incident

The foundational moment of modern Nigerian tribal politics occurred during the 1951 elections in the Western Region House of Assembly. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (an Igbo man) and his party, the NCNC, initially secured a majority victory and were positioned to lead the Western region government.

Awolowo, leading the Yoruba-centric Action Group (AG), rallied Yoruba traditional rulers and politicians overnight. He successfully argued that a Yoruba homeland should be governed by a Yoruba leader, prompting elected members to switch allegiances ("cross the carpet") to the AG.

The legislators switched sides through a calculated combination of late-night secret meetings, intense ethnic appeals, financial incentives, and exploiting loose political party structures.

Why did Awolowo do this?

The ‘igbo sense factor’, hence I said it was a justifiable tribalism . You see Dr Azikiwe already controlled the entire Eastern region with his NCNC party, he installed an Efik man stooge Dr Eyo Ita to be the premier of Eastern region and now wants to form a majority government in Yoruba land and be the premier of western region while controlling the Eastern Region .

Chief Awolowo will have none of that so he did whatever it took to send Dr Azikiwe back to the eastern region and on getting back to the East , Dr Azikiwe removed Dr Eyo Ita as the premier of the Eastern region and became the premier of Eastern Region while Chief Obafemi Awolowo became the premier of Western Nigeria.

To avoid a long read , I will explain how this incident and other incidents that happened up until the 1979 elections that brought Shagari to power led to the adoption of the zoning formula.
