델루루는 망상적이라는 뜻의 ‘델루셔널(delusional)’라는 단어에서 유래된 말로, 2010년대 중반 해외 K팝 팬덤 커뮤니티에서 처음 등장했다. K팝 아이돌과 사귈 수 있다고 믿는 팬들을 일컬어 ‘델루루’라고 불렀다.

지난해 영국 더타임스 등은 그룹 방탄소년단(BTS)의 멤버 지민과 관련해 “틱톡 사용자들이 지민의 사진을 업로드하고 ‘내 남자친구를 공개한다’고 말하는 델루루가 유행하고 있다”며 “K팝 세계에서 가벼운 방식으로 자주 사용된다”고 보도하기도 했다."
