Set Apart For a Purpose

And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
John 17:19 KJV 

Whenever people strive to get great achievements, often they have to go through sacrifices. Athletes go through grueling hours of training everyday just to become faster, stronger, and better. Innovators dedicate years of hard work and money in research and development. Students had to study hard for years and take exams for licensed professions and gain more experience and advanced learnings to become more competent. It is the same with spiritual matters, real commitment needs sacrifice, and no one does it better than Jesus. He sacrificed not to become better but for us to have a better life; spiritual regeneration and eternal life. As you can find in this verse, Jesus talks about sanctifying Himself for the sake of His disciples. But this is not because Jesus is unclean or in need of sanctification like us; He was already pure and without sin. To sanctify here meant that He had to set Himself apart for holy purpose, so that He can finish what He was set out to do, to be a sacrificial lamb who will wipe away the sins of the world. Jesus' commitment to save us led Him to suffer on earth with us and die on the cross for our salvation. His sanctification was not for Himself but for us, so that we might be sanctified through the truth.

Beloved, this sanctification through God's Word shows us the will of God that transforms our being. By Jesus' example, sanctification needs both sacrifice and commitment. We must commit to God's way of transforming our minds, hearts, and lifestyle as we live according to God's truth, daily. The process of sanctification needs sacrifice as we set our lives apart from the world's values and standards. Jesus setting Himself apart for us paved the way for us to also become holy, dedicated to God, and empowered to accomplish His mission for us. Shaped into Christlikeness, we can live in obedience and passion for Him.

Prayer point: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your commitment and sacrifice so that we can be saved. As You set Yourself apart to serve us, enable us also to set our lives apart for Your values and Your purpose. In Jesus name. Amen.
