Tabung Haji is now a conglomerate but it NEVER MEANT to be a conglomerate
Get it?
From when I was young in Kedah, I always hear people say Tabung Haji was why they get to go fulfil the Haj.
How many of you actually know what Tabung Haji was actually for? The RCI report everyone is sharing this week makes it easy to forget.
The story starts in 1959 with an economics lecturer named Ungku Aziz. He studied how kampung Malays saved for haj and found something heartbreaking. Families bought land and buffaloes over decades, then sold everything to reach Mecca, and came home with status but no assets.
Banks were not an option. Interest is riba, and nobody wanted a haj funded by riba.
So Ungku Aziz proposed a fix: a riba-free national savings fund. Pilgrims deposit small amounts over the years. The fund invests in halal assets, pays zakat on their behalf, and returns profits as hibah.
Al-Azhar's rector vetted the concept in 1962. The first counter opened on 30 September 1963, and Ungku Aziz himself was depositor number one with RM100.
It worked beautifully. Maybe too beautifully.
Because a pool of patient, sticky, religiously motivated deposits is the cheapest capital on earth. And cheap capital wants to buy things.
By the 2010s Tabung Haji controlled BIMB Holdings, the parent of Bank Islam, a listed plantation group and an IT company. It was the biggest shareholder of an oil and gas fabricator, and owned hotels and offices from Saudi to the UK. At its peak it held stakes in over 100 listed companies.
A haj savings scheme had become a conglomerate spanning banking, plantations, property, energy and tech. Which sounds like a Korean chaebol. Same sprawl, same political entanglement, same too big to fail status.
But two differences make the comparison flattering to TH.
Chaebols answer to export markets. Samsung had to build phones the world would buy, or die. TH's subsidiaries only had to answer to the fund itself, and several bled money for years while deposits kept flowing in.
And chaebols gamble the founding family's capital. TH gambled haj savings that are government guaranteed and withdrawable any time. When Samsung stumbles, the Lee family pays. When TH stumbled, a government vehicle took RM19.9 billion of underperforming assets off its books in 2018.
The RCI's own conclusion: TH slipped from its founding purpose. It paid hibah it had not earned to attract yield chasers, until the report says 2017's RM3.4 billion profit should have been a RM1.4 billion loss.
Today TH holds RM98 billion for 9.7 million depositors. Parliament debates the report on 11 August.
Ungku Aziz's whole idea was to separate haj savings from worldly risk. Somewhere along the way, the fund became the risk.
Would he recognise what his RM100 built?
Takat baca suku dari 250 m/s, ini 8 point bahasa mudah memahami RCI Tabung Haji;
Jahanam..
Even in Islam, we're taught to make hijrah. If you don't like where you are, move. If your environment drains you, change it. If what influences you isn't good for you, walk away. There's nothing wrong with leaving what harms you.
They put 17 people, married an average of 21 years, into a brain scanner and showed them a photo of their spouse. The same parts of the brain lit up that fire when a teenager has their first crush. Two decades together, and the chemistry was still going off like fireworks.
The study ran at Stony Brook in 2011. What changes after 20 years is the anxiety. That panic of not knowing if they love you back, the wondering, the checking. All of that fades. The pull toward them stays.
So that tells you what old love looks like in the brain. It doesn’t tell you how a couple gets there.
A marriage researcher named John Gottman has spent 40 years on that question. He films couples arguing in his lab at the University of Washington and predicts whether they’ll divorce. He gets it right 93.6% of the time, from 15 minutes of footage. More than 3,000 couples now.
He watches the two-second moments between sentences. The pauses. That’s where the prediction lives. The fights themselves matter less.
His go-to example: your wife is staring out the window and says, look at that bird. You glance up and say, oh wow. Or you keep scrolling on your phone. That tiny choice, that little reach for your attention, is what he calls a bid.
He watched newlyweds in his lab and followed them for six years. The couples who were still married had responded to each other’s bids 86 times out of 100. The couples who divorced had responded 33 out of 100. Same money fights. Same in-laws. Same dishes in the sink. The one thing that was different was the bird.
This part stopped me. Gottman found that 69% of the things every couple fights about are problems that never get solved. The chores. The money. His mother. Whose family they spend Christmas with. The arguments repeat for 50 years. Happy couples and unhappy couples have roughly the same list of problems. The happy ones learned to argue about that list without contempt. The eye roll. The sigh. The little smile that says you are pathetic. Gottman calls contempt the sulfuric acid of relationships. He says it’s the single biggest sign that a marriage is over.
When you see two old people asleep on each other on a plane, the forgiveness in that picture is real. They have absorbed thousands of small failures by now. There is something quieter underneath the forgiveness, though. Decades ago, one of them said look at that bird. The other one looked up.
Men and women don’t fall in love the same way.. and that’s exactly why it’s so complicated, and so beautiful.
A woman often falls in love through ‘consistency’. It’s the little things. The good morning texts. The way you show up when you said you would. The feeling of safety, of being chosen again and again without having to question it.
A man often falls in love through ‘experience’. It’s how he feels around you. The peace. The admiration. The sense that he can be himself without being judged, and still be respected.
She listens for effort.
He feels for peace.
She needs emotional security to open up.
He needs emotional acceptance to stay open.
And here’s where it gets messy.. When she doesn’t feel consistency, she pulls back. When he feels pressure instead of peace, he pulls away.
So both people end up protecting themselves… instead of understanding each other.
Love isn’t about who loves “harder”It’s about learning how the other person loves and meeting them there.
Because the right connection isn’t confusing. It’s two people choosing to understand each other, even when it’s easier not to.
And when that happens?
It doesn’t feel like guessing.
It feels like home.

After a certain age, your parents slowly become your children. They ask simple questions, repeat stories, and depend on your patience the way you once depended on theirs. Very few understand this role reversal. What looks like innocence or inconvenience is really time coming full circle. Don't correct them harshly. Don't rush them. Care for them the way they once protected you. This is not a burden. It is repayment.
