Can AI models write creatively?
To answer this question, we first need to answer what is creativity and what distinguishes creative endeavour from non creative ones.
This paper by Orwig et al. provides an interesting look into the concept of creativity in the age of AI.
The paper asks an important question: What makes a short story feel creative?
The authors look at two key features. First, semantic diversity: the ability to connect distant or unexpected ideas.
Second, perceptual detail: the use of sensory language that helps the reader see, hear, feel, and imagine the scene.
Their findings suggest that creative writing is not just about unusual ideas. It is also about making those ideas vivid. The most creative stories tend to bring together surprising conceptual connections and concrete sensory details.
So creativity is not necessarily originality. A story can be original but still feel flat.
Creativity seems to emerge when conceptual surprise meets sensory richness.
The study also compared short stories written by humans with stories generated by GPT-3 and GPT-4. Interestingly, human raters did not find a significant difference in creative quality between human-written and AI-generated stories.
The authors also found that GPT-4’s creativity ratings correlated strongly with human ratings, which suggests that LLMs may have a role not only in generating creative text, but also in supporting creativity assessment.
Still, there is an important caution. GPT-4 appeared to rate GPT-4-generated stories especially highly, which raises questions about using AI as a judge of creative work.
At its core, creative writing is all about connecting distant ideas in ways that feel vivid, embodied, and meaningful.
And no AI can not engage in embodied experiences, it can simulate them, and therefore its creativity is lacking in substance.
At ACEP, cooperation is more than a value; it’s the foundation of all we do. We believe that meaningful partnerships and strategic collaborations with diverse stakeholders are essential to driving impactful change across Africa’s resource governance landscape.
On Tuesday, 17th June 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming H.E. Jürgen Heissel, the Austrian Ambassador to Ghana, at our office to discuss energy sector challenges, opportunities for collaboration on Ghana’s energy transition, and broader economic development.
Our conversation also explored decarbonization pathways for Africa and the strategic role Austria can play in supporting clean energy solutions, technology transfer, and sustainable industrialization.
Engagements like these are critical as we work towards a resilient, low-carbon future for the continent. We look forward to building on this dialogue and turning ideas into action.

International Youth Day shines a spotlight on the power of young people as digital pioneers, driving innovation and creating solutions for a sustainable future. As three-quarters of youth are embracing digital tools, they are perfectly positioned to lead the transition to a #NetZero world.
At #FEC2024, we’ll explore how Africa’s growing youthful population can harness these digital skills to navigate the complexities of the energy transition. By empowering young entrepreneurs and integrating women and persons with disabilities into the value chain, we can drive economic growth and promote equitable access to opportunities within Africa’s energy sector.
