When the Manusmriti existed, Bharati, the wife of Mandana Mishra, presided over the famous shastrartha between her husband and Adi Shankaracharya and had the intellectual authority to judge the debate. Shankaracharya himself engaged in debate with Bharati and acknowledged her scholarship.

When the Manusmriti existed, women could learn, debate, compose, govern and fight.

India’s history is far more complex than the convenient claim that women had no agency, voice, intellect or power before modern constitutional reforms. Read history in its entirety before rewriting it.
