Coming back to the Royal Children's Hospital today with my wife Fiona was personal.

When our little girl Maddie was a one-year-old, she got pneumonia – twice.

Considering her difficult birth – weighing just 1.8 kilos – she needed special care from the best team in the world.

And she got it from the doctors and nurses at the Royal Children's Hospital.

We've never forgotten it.

Today, I announced that Labor's expansion of the Royal Children's emergency department will be fully staffed from day one.

That means an extra 13,000 children a year will get the care they need.

When your child is sick, nothing matters more.

Today, upon hearing of Labor’s glib announcement to further fund and promote all abortions even up to 9 months, including ‘partial birth’ abortion- I felt strongly as a mother, a rape victim and Victorian Leader of Family First that I should remind everyone- especially those who’ve found out they’re pregnant and are feeling afraid- that babies can bring healing and joy and purpose and strength to even the darkest of circumstances.

And that if you want to keep your baby but need some help, there are tens of thousands of us who will help you.

And to those who have already had abortions, our lives may or may not be very different, but please know all I feel toward you is compassion and from my perspective, I am so sorry and sad that you felt you needed to do that.
