Finished off my Africa week with a long conversation with the Ministry of #Education of Ethiopia. Looks like we're going to start our first national-scale collaboration. (Ethiopia's population is 100+ million.) The government officials who met with me were really sharp at #math and #science. They were the first people ever to point out that in my demonstration video (which I have showed hundreds of times to others), one of our instructors wrote = instead of ≈ on the screen. Later I learned that that person has a Ph.D. in Biology. Thanks to Jelani Nelson @minilek for facilitating the introduction, and more importantly, for creating my initial interest in Ethiopia due to his highly successful @AddisCoder program.
While in Addis Ababa, I gave a talk to at a nearby girls' school. The high school students were really excellent. Sharp, curious, full of questions, open-minded, and hardworking. I spoke in English, and everyone was fluent even though English is not one of the 5 official languages. I've taught thousands of people before, and I could recognize that the 100+ people in the room would be super quick at learning very sophisticated things.
I did notice while walking around on the street that I was the only non-African person I saw over 2 days. So, perhaps one reason all of this terrific talent is not being fully engaged in global employment is because outside people don't have a way to identify great people from far away. As I mentioned in my previous post about Rwanda, our goal with our LIVE program is to systematically introduce and network all of the Thought Full people in the world (who love people and love deep thinking) while they're still kids. I predict that can unlock a new wave of economic development 15 years later, as capital and resources flow through these newly generated high-trust connections (built over years, while everyone was still kids).
Now flying on to #Dubai for the weekend. I have a fairly unscheduled weekend, uncharacteristically, so if anyone knows people in #UAE who are interested in revamping education there, please reach out.
More generally, if anyone knows governments in the world who are interested in updating their #STEM education to face a world where #AI can get 100% on their existing standardized exams, I'm happy to talk to them too. We have a fully-scalable program which operates across global time zones, online, with everything live-streamed by terrific real people. Any country which joins will get its Thought Full youth linked into the global network. We teach 11–13 year olds how to creatively generate their own problem-solving ideas while loving people, 14–18 year olds how to communicate and lead and network, and 19+ how to use that network to become practical leaders in government and entrepreneurship. We are also able to run special classes to teach teachers. Our mission is https://t.co/cPdqAhQRz3
It was an honor to interview one of my heroes at our recent Berkeley Summit—Professor @istoica05, the Founder/Chairman of @databricks and Berkeley legend who built what is now the Data & AI platform valued at $100 Billion.
He had plenty of valuable lessons to share with our AI founders on blitzscaling from his lab on campus to $4B+ revenue.
This recent Forbes feature (I'll link to it in the comments) highlights why Berkeley continues to dominate AI innovation thanks to Ion's contributions 🐻
Ion has an insane track record for building category-defining companies straight from his Berkeley lab—Databricks, @anyscalecompute, and now @lmarena_ai (ALL in our portfolio at @thehousefund).
But the thing that's always inspired me most about Professor Stoica is his dedication to Berkeley. Unicorn after unicorn, and he's still right here on campus, pushing forward open source research and mentoring the next generation of builders.
He shared a bit about why Berkeley and the researchers it attracts: "Young people in their formative years don't know what is possible or not....They have this kind of belief, and that's why you get unexpected solutions."
THIS is why Berkeley produces the world's most valuable AI companies. It's not just the research or the access.
There's a culture of believing the impossible is possible, and grad students have the support of legends like Ion to help them get there.
We're proud to call Stoica part of THF's team. He's been a Faculty Partner and advisor to our firm and founders for the greater part of a decade.
Thanks Ion for making sure the future of AI is built by Berkeley, for the betterment of humanity.
Just like it always has.

Very excited to see our Gemini models getting better and better at coding! An advanced version of Gemini 2.5 Deep Think at the 2025 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals achieved gold-medal level performance! 🎉

Garry and I pushed in this video to stop AB 500 and AB 1217. As of today, both bills are now dead.
The people are awake, and the tides are turning. Our elected leaders destroying K-12 education will no longer be tolerated.
AddisCoder graduation is now complete. 121 students completed our 4-week program on algorithms, representing 13 kilils across the country. Thanks to all our partners and donors, and we look forward to Summer 2026 — applications will open next week.
