Pakistan has taken a major step toward granting Gilgit-Baltistan provincial status after its Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging the federal government to make it the country's fifth province. If approved through constitutional amendments, the region could gain formal representation in Pakistan's Parliament while remaining linked to the broader Kashmir dispute.

The move comes amid domestic political and security challenges, and also carries strategic significance because Gilgit-Baltistan is the gateway to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). With India maintaining that the entire region is an integral part of its territory, could this proposal further intensify tensions over Kashmir?
