The law is the law, and the law states that a contact on the standing leg of the opponent, at that height, is a red. Period.

It doesn't matter if, in other cases, the refs also made a mistake; they cannot just decide that the rules of the game don't apply in certain situations...

Ref Salisbury, however, confirmed the goal after reviewing the images, as the rules for handball were updated for the 2025 / 2026 season:

Under 2025/26 IFAB Law 12, accidental handball is NOT an offence unless the arm is in an unnatural position OR the player immediately scores directly from the hand/arm.

Neither condition is clearly met here: Mbeumo doesn't score, nor is the arm in an unnatural position.

Controversy apart, well done on the ref team for following the updated rules and confirming this goal.

@bayer04_en Scandal penalty, Palacios pushed and hit Quansah 15s earlier, then Schick pushed, the ref was going to give the foul but decided against, then the cross, the penalty. Why does VAR only check the penalty situation and not the play given there were TWO fouls not given?!
