पंजाब में इस कानून के लागू होने से पहले भी पराली जलाई जाती थी लेकिन उसका समय अलग होता था. सितंबर के अंत तक फसल काटकर पराली जला दी जाती थी. नया कानून लागू होने से फसल चक्र आगे बढ़ा तो पराली जलाने का काम नवंबर तक होने लगा.
