Corporate profits have soared as % GDP, reaching a record 13.3% in Q2 '26. This is about 4% GDP above 2019, about $1.2 trillion or $9,000 per household going mainly to capital rather than labor.
Clearly there's plenty of wealth at the top to solve any deficit problem. But there's plenty of income there too, from higher rates and the gigantic tax expenditures; the top 10% get about $500B per year. We could stop paying that to them.

How bad things are for Trump:
He's now managed to go 5 points underwater on "border security" -- this despite border-crossings dropping to record lows on his watch.

Real disposable personal income, basically the after-tax income a household has to spend considering inflation, is up about 1.3% since Trump started. Recent year comparison:
2023: +5.4%
2024: +2.2%
2025: +0.8%

🧵A quick look at today's personal income release. The personal savings rate has fallen from 5.1% when Trump started to 3.0% in July 2026. Instead of saving about $9,000 per household annualized, we're now around $5,000, down about 40%. Why is this? 1/

Q2 2026 GDP growth was down to 1.5% according to the second estimate released this morning.
That provides further evidence for an ongoing slowdown under Trump.
U.S. debt surpassed 100% of GDP this year and is on track to reach 188% over the next 30 years, according to new analysis by @BBKogan and @econjared.
They find the debt would instead be trending down toward 48%, were it not for the Bush and Trump tax cuts.
NEW: ICE data released under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that more than half of all ICE arrests are now people with no criminal record; no prior convictions or pending charges.
In the first week of August, 55% of all ICE arrests were of people with no criminal record.
We've got a revenue problem, and Republican tax cuts are the reason. From 1980-2000, revenue grew 7.1% per year while spending grew 5.7%. But after the Bush & Trump tax cuts and three Republican recessions, revenue growth was cut nearly in half.

Trump said he'd get gas prices below $2 a gallon.
Thanks to his Iran War and the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, gas has spiked to double that level.

Trump promised to bring down the government’s debt.
Instead, it’s continued to grow, passing 100% of GDP and on track to exceed its WWII record in the next few years.
