On August 13, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta were kidnapped by Artur Santos, the leader of the Masonic government at Ouren. He demanded that they disclose to him the secrets revealed to them by Our Lady, but despite being imprisoned and threatened with death, they firmly refused.

Although the children were unable to make it to the Cova da Iria that day, Our Lady appeared to them again on August 19th, at Valinhos. She instructed them to continue coming to the Cova on the thirteenth of each month, and promised a miracle that would help all to believe.

When asked what they should do with the donated money, Our Lady asked for two portable stands to be made for a procession on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and that the surplus funds should be used to build a chapel. When asked if the sick would be healed, Our Lady replied that some would be cured within that year. Our Lady then said; "Pray, pray much, and sacrifice for sinners, for many souls go to hell because there is no one to sacrifice and pray for them."
