Videos from Shangkai Kuki Village show that central forces, allegedly “pro-Kuki,” assaulted Kuki women without any provocation. They fired tear gas at peaceful protesters. One woman was seriously injured.

Kharam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi District, Manipur, was allegedly burned down on Saturday, May 30, 2026, according to local residents and eyewitnesses. Villagers accused cadres of the Proxy Army of NSCN-IM (National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Isak-Muivah) faction, along with individuals from neighbouring Liangmai villages- Konsakhul, Konsaram, of being responsible for the arson.
Eyewitnesses reported that central security forces and Manipur Police personnel conducted an operation in the area prior to the incident, during which residents were evacuated from the village. Following the clearance of civilians, the village was reportedly set ablaze, resulting in extensive destruction of homes and property, with numerous houses reduced to ashes.
The timing of the incident is particularly striking. Even as the Kuki-Zo community was engaged in a peaceful rally — demanding justice for the killing of three pastors and calling for the safe return of 14 hostages — NSCN (IM) proxy cadres allegedly burned down the Kuki-Zo village of Kharam Vaiphei. The contrast between the community’s non-violent pursuit of justice and the alleged act of arson against one of their villages has deepened the sense of grief and outrage among the Kuki-Zo people.
The incident reflects the ongoing tensions between communities in the ethnically complex hill districts of Manipur, and raises urgent questions about the protection of civilian settlements amid unresolved conflicts in the region.

PRESS STATEMENT
22nd May, 2026.
The Zillai (Vaiphei Students’ Association) General Headquarters vehemently condemns the malicious, defamatory, and baseless allegations being actively circulated on various social media platforms targeting Shri Lalboi Vaiphei, Chief of Leilon Vaiphei, falsely alleging his involvement in the abduction at Leilon Village on 13th May 2026.
Shri Lalboi Vaiphei is an exemplary leader and respected former Vice President of Zillai GHQ. Throughout his public life and organizational tenure, he has been a dedicated champion of education, working untiringly toward educational development and community upliftment in rural areas. His track record remains unblemished, upstanding, and completely untainted.
Shri Lalboi Vaiphei was not even in the state of Manipur on 13th May 2026; he had traveled outside the state for medical treatment well before that tragic day. We state with absolute clarity, conviction, and without any reservation that Shri Lalboi Vaiphei is completely and unquestionably innocent. We state with absolute certainty that he has no nexus whatsoever with any militant group, nor has he ever instigated or encouraged his villagers to engage in unlawful acts. He has no role, connection, or involvement whatsoever in the incidents being falsely and maliciously attributed to him on digital platforms. We categorically reject, utterly denounce, and dismiss these fabricated allegations and malicious propaganda.
We urge the public, media houses, and social media users not to fall prey to or propagate such unverified and mischievous rumors. Zillai GHQ views this as character assassination and malicious attempts to defame our former leader.
Further, we also express our deepest grief and solidarity with the families mourning the brutal killing of our three senior church leaders on 13th May—a heinous and tragic incident that has deeply shaken the entire state and wounded the conscience of all peace-loving citizens. We also extend our sincere sympathy and concern to the families of the hostages from both sides, who continue to endure immense pain, fear, and uncertainty during this tragic period. We share in their sufferings and stand in unwavering solidarity with all affected families, believing that only meaningful dialogue can bring lasting peace to both the communities.
The Zillai, a pioneer student body founded in 1939 under the aegis of Rev. Thangkai and Rev Lungpau who were the first Christians converts of the southern part of Manipur, appeals fervently to everyone to exercise positive restraint from spreading enmity and violence among communities. The Zillai, persistently upholding the values of the founding fathers, appeals to everyone to exercise restraint and work towards the restoration of peace in Manipur.

#NSCN-IM has been misleading the people of #Nagaland in the name of ‘Naga unity’ all this while. What good have you actually done for Nagaland so far? Answer us.#Kohima#Dimapur https://t.co/QN79LxrbRG
A minor with muscular dystrophy. 3 students among 14 hostages still held. No contact nor accountability. If student bodies can abduct civilians while authorities stay silent, Manipur has lost law and humanity.
NSCN-IM under the SDSA facade must release all hostages immediately.
🚨 MANIPUR HOSTAGE CRISIS
Families of the 14 detained villagers, 13 from Taphou Kuki and 1 from Hengbung, have issued a heartbreaking plea for their immediate and safe release. Calling them innocent civilians with no role in the conflict, the families say every passing hour brings unbearable fear, trauma and suffering. Their cry rises above politics, a desperate appeal from mothers, wives and children simply wanting their loved ones home alive.

It's not a time for vengeance or to meet our sentimental wishes by pitting against each other; it's time to pray and appeal for the safe release of innocent civilians who are still in captivity.
And, I strongly demand for a fair and just investigation on Kotlen-Kotzim & Dolang incident, and punish the perpetrators befittingly.

It is deeply alarming that the abducted villagers are now reportedly feared dead following the killing of the three Kuki pastors. The continued silence and delay from the concerned authorities is unacceptable.
We urgently appeal for immediate state intervention.
