Arturo Ripstein's "The Castle of Purity" (1973) was based on a real life case of a man who isolated his family and didn't allow them out of the house in the 1950s. The case was talked about a lot. Arturo Ripstein was a little boy at that time and vaguely remembered the case.
The case inspired a book ("La carcajada del gato") and a play ("Los motivos del lobo"). Ripstein was once asked to act in the play when he was little, but he rejected it since he felt he was a terrible actor. Actress Dolores del Rio was interested to make a movie out of the play. She asked Luis Buñuel. Buñuel asked her to contact Arturo Ripstein.
When she approached Ripstein to adapt the play into a movie, he said it is better to go straight to the source and make a screenplay out of the real case. Ripstein talked with Gabriel Figueroa to be the cinematographer & asked José Emilio Pacheco to assist him with the screenplay. It took many intense weeks of writing to finish the screenplay.
Ripstein wanted Fernando Rey for the lead role. Dolores del Rio agreed. Fernando Rey accepted to star in the picture after Ripstein called him. Two weeks later, Dolores told that she didn't want Fernando Rey and demanded that Ignacio López Tarso be cast for the role. Ripstein thought that he wasn't right for the role.
When Ripstein completed the script and went to hand it over to the production company, he was told that the lead actor is going to be Ignacio López Tarso whether he likes it or not. Ripstein instantly rejected the idea. Then they said that they would change the director of the picture.
However, the production company didn't pay Ripstein for the script till then. So, Ripstein told the production head, Gabriel Figueroa & Dolores del Rio that they were fired. He was 27 years old at that time.
He then made the movie with the help of another production company.
P.S: On this day, 53 years ago, "The Castle of Purity" (1973) was released in Mexico.
Mexican provocateur Arturo Ripstein takes the lovers-on-the-run premise to its wickedly perverse extreme. Based on the same true-crime tale that inspired THE HONEYMOON KILLERS, it blends golden-age melodrama with startling violence & Buñuelian black humor. https://t.co/XZzNOeiZWl
