I don’t deny the power of my father’s most well-known speech, ‘I Have a Dream.’
However, its power and popularity (with focus on its conclusion) have been misused to weaken its clear messaging about ending racism, stopping police brutality, ensuring voting rights, and eradicating economic injustice.
Why didn’t Pastor Lorenzo Sewell pray these parts of the Dream during President Trump’s Inauguration?
Because the inconvenient truth (that disallows embracing the pipe dream that racism no longer exists in this country) is that Project 2025 and some of the plans that his voters encouraged POTUS to roll out on day one are reflective of an ‘America’ that denies the comprehensive King.
That’s why those who quote Daddy out of context and without the spirit of nonviolence don’t pray using my father’s ’The Other America,’ ‘The Three Evils of Society, ‘Beyond Vietnam’…or ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail.’
It’s simpler to distort the rousing conclusion of #IHaveADream and twist it to push a narrative that authentic, compassionate work to prevent and stop discrimination is actually discriminatory.
It is much harder to distort #LetterFromBirminghamJail’s call to conscience to #Christians and its powerfully relevant teaching on nonviolent direct action, injustice anywhere, devotion to order over justice, doing what’s right, and disobeying unjust laws.
Who can validate inhumane legislation by integrating prayers about civil disobedience and freedom being demanded by the oppressed, both topics covered in LFBJ?
We need to get Daddy’s Dream right, while also realizing that, in his other speeches, sermons, and writings, including LFBJ, he provides the love-centered strategy and courageous path for realizing his Dream.
And we haven’t collectively embraced that strategy or started on that path. In fact, several of the Executive Orders rescinded by President Trump this week blatantly disregard both the strategy and the path.
So keep praying…but don’t pray the Dream in pursuit of false peace, which cries for unity while decrying inclusive and equitable policies and practices.
Pray the Dream in tandem with work for true peace, which, as my father said, is the presence of justice.

This is one of the core reasons liberals inevitably lose to fascism—they think they can win with a clever gotcha, when they’ve actually already lost by presuming that the argument the fascists pose was in good faith to begin with.
It’s time for honesty (it always is): the first two years of the Biden-Harris administration, Dems held the House & Senate, Roe was not codified, the minimum wage was not raised, Americans didn’t get universal healthcare or even a public option, student debt cancellation was not passed into law, etc.
The midterms in 2022, Democrats lost the House and in 2024, lost the House, Senate, White House and popular vote.
Democrats unfortunately did not move with the fierce urgency of now and the party establishment focused on going to war with those who tried moving with urgency.
The way to start to repair this? The Democratic Party must get corporate and dark money out of the party. They can decide to serve the people if they want to, all it takes is a bit of political courage.
“Nazi” isn’t a slur. It’s a word that describes real people who earnestly believe in their ideas. Their ideas are disgusting and hateful, but of course they often do not realize it.
I keep running into racists who think that it’s not white supremacist to think that white people are inherently superior to other races. No…that’s the whole definition!! The fact that they believe it earnestly and don’t think it’s an idiotic, hateful belief doesn’t mean it’s not an idiotic, hateful belief.
Nazi isn’t a word that means “bad evil boogeyman” it means “someone who believes in their own racial superiority, extreme protectionist nativism, the purifying of society by eliminating undesirables, expansionism, active suppression of dissent, and total state power held in the hands of a very small group.”
Make sure the people you’re cheering for don’t believe these things because otherwise…
People literally died for this. Arrested en masses in the streets. LBJ signed this bill partially because so many people were convinced Kennedy was killed for signing the Civil Rights Act. LBJ knew the dangers of NOT implementing this. This is just… wow.
Under Trump's executive order, every single person in America is now legally classified as female.
All embryos begin by developing female sex organs, with male sex organs only replacing them at around 6 weeks of gestation.
If your Christianity causes you to be offended by someone asking the most powerful person in the country to be merciful towards the powerless, then you have deeply, deeply misunderstood the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The most important priority for Black people in the next 4 years is community. I hope coffee shops, day lounges, and libraries reclaim their place as hubs for organizing and fellowship. Social media can’t and won’t be the place anymore
as crazy as it is to see pop base live tweeting our country’s collapse, i honestly really respect them (and pop crave) for relaying all these updates to their majority gen z audience instead of “sticking to pop culture.” this is how people get news now, and politics affect us all
Insane to me that the Hollywood Reporter, of all places, is commenting on this with any sort of moral clarity while WaPo, NBC, CNN, NYT, etc are actively avoiding any sort of coverage is pathetic. American Journalism is so washed
For years, I’ve seen journalists cover the “manosphere” as a random group of friends who show up on each other’s podcasts. Today, I and other reporters published a story firmly showing how these YouTubers boost each other and politicians while steering male culture to the right
Just to play back what happened here.
A Canadian Palestinian came on CBC to talk about losing her family members to IDF strikes.
The CBC host tried to shut down how she described the horrific situation in Gaza.
Unacceptable.
There is no room, whether at the CBC or anywhere else, to reprimand or block a guest who lost family members from calling a spade a spade.
Numerous international human rights organizations, including Amnesty and Human Rights Watch, have referred to the mass death in Gaza as a genocide.
International bodies have also referred to the situation as a genocide or plausible genocide.
The CBC and Natasha Fatah have no right to stop any guest from expressing this perspective.
It is a disgrace to those who have suffered, as well as to the honest and free exchange of ideas.
We encourage folks to write to the CBC today and tell them how sad and ridiculous this situation is at https://t.co/ylnOQKLyra
