1. I have always found the way the Law and legal matters are discussed in Ghana mildly amusing.
2. No, it is not the pompous jargon and the echo chamber style. I'm instead talking about the impression given that the law can lead to "ultimate truth" if only one were skilled enough.
3. Thus, even when dozens of lawyers are busily shouting into the din and increasing public confusion, non-lawyers are asked to treat the earnest babble as if some profound mysteries are being resolved. 😂
4. Here is the fact: the Law is NOT math. Greater knowledge and skill do not lead one to ultimate truth in any social or political matter.
5. Watch and listen carefully and you would see that in any important issue lawyers are often just as divided as non-lawyers based on their political biases and social allegiances.
6. What this means, therefore, is that for any serious public matter, the tendency to assume that lawyers will lead the country to some ultimate truth should be discarded.
7. Issues of such consequence should be discussed from multiple angles: the political, the sociological, the policy-intent, etc etc.
8. Whilst there is no guarantee that a society will ever get to ultimate truth, rounded analysis involving multiple perspectives should get that society closer to a second best destination: THE MOST SENSIBLE AND SOCIALLY BENEFICIAL OUTCOME.
9. Mastery of legal concepts and the text of the law does not guarantee that a person's thinking will carry the society forward towards the sensible and the beneficial. Nor is it even the case that on any issue one can arrive at the most accurate version of the law. The best lawyers can disagree to the bitter end. Like I said, the Law is NOT math.
10. In the places where Ghana's Law was borrowed, Europe that is, the earliest versions of law, such as Common Law, Salic Law, Canon Law etc, did not emerge as texts handed down like the 10 commandments.
11. They grew out of the best learning available to the people generally. Learning accumulated from multiple perspectives over hundreds of years. And then finally sealed in power.
12. The contemporary Ghanaian situation is, of course, one where the Law is also meant to be made up of aggregated concepts from multiple contexts of the national experience.
13. Yet, that experience was not shaped only by lawyers. For that fact alone, one would expect that in any discussion of an important matter, the public will draw on the broad wisdom of Ghanaian politics, sociology, civics, policy, philosophy and logic. But is that what we see?
14. It is in the above context that I worry about Ghana's Supreme Court. I have closely and keenly observed public affairs in Ghana for two decades. Never have I seen confidence in the Supreme Court fall to such a low extent.
15. The question I have is whether this issue of the integrity and legitimacy of the Supreme Court can be analysed solely in the context of the Law and the various legal texts that define the top court's role and practice.
16. Those who say that there is no issue and that all the discontent is the doing of standard partisan wrangling would no doubt insist that we merely focus on the Supreme Court's legal standing and actions. This, once again, is the pseudo-mathematical approach at work.
17. We cannot extract respect from some dry legal text for an institution like we can factor a root from a polynomial. There is no simple formula by which we can deduce from the Law itself, alone, whether the Supreme Court is "doing the right thing".
18. Our assessment of the quality of the Supreme Court must reflect various perspectives of our national life: the political, the sociological, the policy-dimension, and the historical.
19. Any Supreme Court or friend of the Supreme Court that cannot examine the institution's reputation in the holistic manner suggested above is simply not reflecting deeply enough.

We want to update you on an incident that happened with our Grok response bot on X yesterday.
What happened:
On May 14 at approximately 3:15 AM PST, an unauthorized modification was made to the Grok response bot's prompt on X. This change, which directed Grok to provide a specific response on a political topic, violated xAI's internal policies and core values. We have conducted a thorough investigation and are implementing measures to enhance Grok's transparency and reliability.
What we’re going to do next:
- Starting now, we are publishing our Grok system prompts openly on GitHub. The public will be able to review them and give feedback to every prompt change that we make to Grok. We hope this can help strengthen your trust in Grok as a truth-seeking AI.
- Our existing code review process for prompt changes was circumvented in this incident. We will put in place additional checks and measures to ensure that xAI employees can't modify the prompt without review.
- We’re putting in place a 24/7 monitoring team to respond to incidents with Grok’s answers that are not caught by automated systems, so we can respond faster if all other measures fail.
