The @theJeremyVine controversy isn't just about one tweet or one argument about welfare.

It's about the way disabled people have repeatedly been presented on his show: as a cost, a burden on taxpayers, potential fraudsters or people who need to be pushed back into work.

In 2023, the Jeremy Vine on 5 account asked whether it was time to “crack down” on people deemed too sick to work — a framing disability organisations criticised as demonising sick and disabled people.

30 January 2025: it aired “Should govt cut sickness benefits?”, explicitly discussing government plans to tackle the cost of health and disability benefits.

What's particularly significant is the framing. This isn't simply a show occasionally reporting on welfare policy. The examples include phrases such as “crack down,” “jobless benefits,” “sick-note generation” and “is the benefits system unfair?”

The facts matter. DWP figures show 4.5 million working-age people in England and Wales received an incapacity or disability benefit in August 2025. But the DWP says the increase from 2.9 million in 2019 is partly because Universal Credit replaced older benefits, changing what gets counted.

And 4 million people were entitled to PIP in April 2026. PIP helps with the additional costs of disability; it isn't simply an unemployment payment.

So yes, debate welfare. Scrutinise spending. Challenge government policy.

But when a programme repeatedly invites audiences to view disabled people through the lens of cost, suspicion and whether they're “really” deserving, that isn't a neutral debate.

Disabled people aren't a welfare problem. They're people. And the way television talks about them has consequences.
