I did not know Hon. #DonatilleMukabalisa before I entered politics. At the time, I was the Acting Dean of Postgraduate Studies at the #UniversityOfKigali. One of my former Masters students saw my talents and potential.

He had been tasked with identifying #Elite people who could be vetted to become #LiberalParty #MembersOfParliament. He told me that he had recommended my name and that I could receive a call at any time.
A few days later, I received a phone call from a number ending in 078830.... In a very calm and gentle voice in Kinyarwanda, she said, "Muraho #Gamariel, ni #Donatille muvugana." That was the beginning of a relationship that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

From that day, you never turned your back on me. You trusted me, guided me, and gave me opportunities to serve. You believed in me when many others did not.

When I decided to resign as a Member of Parliament of #Rwanda, I wrote my resignation letter and sent it to you. You wanted me to come and meet you before my resignation could proceed.

I deliberately avoided that meeting. It was not because I did not respect you or because I feared you. On the contrary, I feared that having a one-to-one personal discussion would cause you more pain than it would cause me. I was sure you would be more affected than I would.

I knew you would recall how you had raised me politically and how you had tested me before entrusting me with greater responsibilities. I knew you would remind me how you had supported my candidature to serve on a #ParliamentaryInquiryCommission, how you had supported me to represent the Parliament of Rwanda in the Parliamentary #AssemblyOfLaFrancophonie, and how you had supported me to become President of the Rwanda Parliamentary Network on Population and Development #RPRPD

Above all, I knew you would remind me of the promise you had made to support my candidature for the position of #SecondVicePresident of the #LiberalParty. It was a position that I never occupied because I resigned just two weeks before the election.

I feared that recalling all those moments of confidence and support would weaken my resolve and make it even more painful for both of us.

Instead, I told you that, in the best interests of the Party, I had to resign. You simply replied, "If that is what you have decided from the bottom of your heart, then no problem." Those words reflected your wisdom, your respect for individual conscience, and your remarkable leadership.

You loved me, and I loved you. Ours was a relationship built on trust, loyalty, mutual respect, and gratitude. It is for that reason that I #Dedicated my book, #ThePowerOfKeepingSober, to you, as a small expression of my appreciation for your unwavering confidence in me. You kept calling me, advising me, …. Things I could not even do to myself!

The last time we spoke in this year , it was during our party meeting , your hug,your smile, our jokes will always remain.

Tonight,all these memories came back to me. #ICanNotSleep. My whole body is trembling with grief because I have lost not only a political leader but also a mentor, a motherly figure, and someone who genuinely believed in me.
