No, he is correct. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Mass leaves the paper as gases, not thermal energy (as enthalpy here). Some of the papers weight does come back due to the fire quelling and oxygen bonding to the remaining paper and ashes. Oxygen has weight/mass too. ✌️
