I am deeply saddened by the collapse today of a multi-storey building under construction in Eastleigh, a busy commercial and residential area of Kenya's capital, Nairobi.
The building, believed to be about 18 storeys high, came down with many people feared trapped beneath the rubble. Nairobi police chief Issa Mohamud said more than 10 of its upper floors were still being built.
Rescue efforts were hampered when police fired tear gas to disperse crowds after looting broke out at the site, as officers worked to clear the area and give emergency teams access.
The surrounding high-rise buildings have made the work even harder.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the building had no occupation certificate, warning that this may have cost lives.
Building collapses are a recurring problem in Nairobi, and county officials have been accused of failing to inspect sites properly and make sure developers follow safety rules. An audit of nearly 15,000 buildings by the National Building Inspectorate found that 72.3 percent were unsafe and 4.8 percent were very dangerous.
My thoughts are with the families waiting for news of their loved ones, and with the rescue teams working through the rubble.
Surely in life there a moment you need read the room & chill. This is too bad to insult & disrespect the men who put his head on the line for Ed.Ed if he really wanted he would have stopped this nonsense.
RGM: I natured ED & put him in gvt (even after he lost Kwekwe to MDC) He turned against me backed by the army
Now swap RGM with CGC & the same snake strikes again
CGC: He was sacked from Zanu & gvt & became asylum seeker
I brought him back. He turned against me backed by moguls
“I’m dealing with a health issue and I’m not well enough to work today. I’d prefer to keep the medical details private, but I’ll follow the company’s sick-leave procedure and provide any required documentation.”
Alternative answer:
“I’m dealing with a health issue and I’m not fit to work today. I’d prefer to keep the medical details private. I’ll keep you updated on my expected return and follow the required sick-leave process.”
Sample conversation with an insisting boss:
Boss: What exactly is wrong with you?
Employee: I’m dealing with a health issue and I’m not well enough to work today.
Boss: Yes, but what illness do you have?
Employee: I’d prefer to keep the medical details private, but I’ll follow our sick-leave procedure.
Boss: I need to know whether you're actually sick.
Employee: I understand you need to manage my absence. I’m confirming that I’m unable to work today. If documentation is required under company policy, I’ll provide the appropriate documentation.
Boss: Just tell me your symptoms.
Employee: I’d rather not discuss my private medical details. I’m happy to provide the information required for processing my sick leave.
Boss: Why are you being difficult?
Employee: I’m not trying to be difficult. I’m simply keeping my medical information private while following the company's absence procedure.
Boss: Fine. When are you coming back?
Employee: I currently expect to return tomorrow. If that changes, I’ll let you know as early as possible.
After the black plastic bags ran out, the team cleaning up the Marondera helicopter crash site began using gloves to collect and carry human remains.
It is shocking to think that the remains of a millionaire who donated close to US$50 million in vehicles and cash gifts ended up being collected using plastic bags and gloves.
