The Spanish Blue Division had an excellent combat record in WW2.

They were mostly positioned in the north, holding the line around the Siege of Leningrad.

They were experts at close assault and trench warfare, and were considered incredibly brave - even reckless - by the Germans.

Their most famous battle was Krasny Bor, 1943.

Soviets attacked with 30-40,000 men supported by about 100 KV-1 heavy tanks.

The Spanish had 5,500 men and very little heavy equipment (armour, anti-tank, artillery) but they repulsed the Soviet assault, suffering huge casualties.

The British Free Corps 🇬🇧

Few people realise that a British unit existed within the Waffen-SS during the Second World War.

Known as the British Free Corps, it was formed in 1944 from British men who volunteered to serve with Germany. The intention was to create a British anti-communist formation to fight alongside German forces on the Eastern Front.

The unit spent much of its existence training and undertaking propaganda duties. In the final months of the war, some of its members were attached to Waffen-SS formations on the Eastern Front, where they saw front-line service as Germany fought the advancing Soviet Army.

Following Germany's surrender in 1945, surviving members were taken into Allied custody. Several were later prosecuted for assisting the "enemy", while recruiter John Amery was convicted of high treason and executed.
